Once off the car, is this something simple? I have heard old stories of long screwdrivers or even burning out the Cat. but what is the "proper" way of gutting a Cat. Converter??? I never knew them to be bolted together.....and I haven't been under my car in awhile to look.

You best get it all out. Anything less and you might as well not do it.

I did this for the Z last year...I used a long 1/2' drill bit. the Z's cat's have 2 portions, 1 is similar to a soft cermaic and is super easy to get out, the 2nd is a metal matrix type honeycomb, which is much harder to get out. You'll want to wear some kind of mask b/c there's lots of dust that comes out.
I have my OE gutted cats laying around, if you want them, I can sell them to you cheap + shipping. (I had bought a 2nd set of cats to do this to just in case I needed to put the OE cats back on...it could be very expensive if you need OE cats in a hurry)
IM if you're interested.

I've never done this, but I would assume you could use a nice 3/4"x18" Ship Auger Bit to make quick work of this. They're meant for cutting through wood with the occasional nail, but since the inside of a cat is not solid, I think this would work nicely.

platinum, rhodium, palladium ...
that is why they are $1000 OEM.
But people sell them for $50 used because to your average consumer doesn't have any use for this valuable metal.

I have no idea, but my guess is the cat material is probably about 0.5 - 5.0 % Pt by weight
