Default Need A DIY on Cat Converter Gutting

Once off the car, is this something simple? I have heard old stories of long screwdrivers or even burning out the Cat. but what is the "proper" way of gutting a Cat. Converter??? I never knew them to be bolted together.....and I haven't been under my car in awhile to look.

Hammer and "driving" device should take care of things.

You best get it all out. Anything less and you might as well not do it.

The easiest method is a pair of well made test pipes. Less than $200.

I did this for the Z last year...I used a long 1/2' drill bit. the Z's cat's have 2 portions, 1 is similar to a soft cermaic and is super easy to get out, the 2nd is a metal matrix type honeycomb, which is much harder to get out. You'll want to wear some kind of mask b/c there's lots of dust that comes out.

I have my OE gutted cats laying around, if you want them, I can sell them to you cheap + shipping. (I had bought a 2nd set of cats to do this to just in case I needed to put the OE cats back on...it could be very expensive if you need OE cats in a hurry)

IM if you're interested.

I've never done this, but I would assume you could use a nice 3/4"x18" Ship Auger Bit to make quick work of this. They're meant for cutting through wood with the occasional nail, but since the inside of a cat is not solid, I think this would work nicely.

Just buy some test pipes...It will save you the pain when you need to go back to stock.

Not sure if I'd use a nice expensive auger bit like that. I've used a fan downrod and rubber mallet with success before but not on a modern cat.

Just FYI there are a lot of very expensive metals in your cats...

platinum, rhodium, palladium ...

that is why they are $1000 OEM.

But people sell them for $50 used because to your average consumer doesn't have any use for this valuable metal.

I have no idea, but my guess is the cat material is probably about 0.5 - 5.0 % Pt by weight
