Default Anyone ever cut open a stock airbox?

I'm planning to put my popcharger into a stock airbox so it will act kind of like the Stillen intake. Anyone ever cut it open? I wonder if it's like the headlights where you can bake it and pull it apart. I doubt it though...any suggestions???

Ok...I was looking at it and the ring on the PC (for Pop Charger) isn't going to fit perfectly. If I get the box open, I will have to make a lot of adjustments... Hopefully it will turn out okay, or else I've wasted my time and a stock airbox!@!

Haha...ok I cut out the back of the airbox with a jigsaw. The edges are kind of rough but I will sand them out later. The popcharger barely fits inside but it looks like it will work. The top won't be completely covered but I think it's still better than the JWT heatshield. Will post pics later~

No offense on the JWT stuff but dont you remove the end of your air box to put one of those on ? This is a serious question.

I think you will end up limiting flow... I read an article mentioning that Jim Wolf had tried an enclosure similar to the Stillen's and found a drop off in power.

This won't be a complete enclosure but something that definitely shields more heat over the HWT heat shield. Do you know where you read that article? I would love to see what they said.

Ok, I just got it done but it's not the prettiest thing. After finishing, I took it out for about 15 minutes. Honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference. I'm pretty sure there are no definite "gains". One thing I DID notice was that after I was finished driving, I immediately popped open the hood to touch the air filter. I could leave my hand on there without it burning. Before with just the heatshield, I remember doing the same thing but it was hot to the touch. Could be my imagination though...here are the pics:

Basically the biggest difference between the heatshield and this is that this box directs the air from the front bumper directly into the filter. Also, if you look at the JWT heatshield, there's slight "holes" where hot air could get through.

If you are getting cooler air, your definetly making more power.

Air temperature makes a big difference on the ECU's spark timing.

I dont care what anyone say, great JOB!! My experiment is coming really soon, am gonna try to purchase a bigger velocity stack and put it in the stock airbox with the k&n drop in...my biggest problem so far is finding the 2.75 sized stack

That's a good idea, but I'm not sure if a bigger opening will mean more power. It would be good to dyno your experiment.

As for my little mod, I know it's not pretty by any means but the heat is seriously getting to me. This takes all of about 10 minutes to swap and during the winter I'm probably going back to the shield.

I'm also thinking about fabricating a tube that draws air from the bumper...stay tuned...

I meant to do something like this, but noticed that it wouldn't really fit... and gave up

I wanted to do some kind of enclosure with fiberglass but I ended up being too lazy to pick up a spare stock intake to hack up

wow, cool.. id doubt a dyno would show much (if any diff) but it may really work in real time if your able to get a better cooler airflow?? good work....
