NOOB exhaust question...?

NOOB exhaust question...?
can someone explain what all comes with an exhaust system...
i want to get the RS-R exhaust, but i dont know if i need to purchase y-pipes with it, or not? or do y-pipes come with it??
and what is the diff between high flow cats and test pipes...test pipes seem a lot cheaper, but it says they get more HP usually...
so what i was thinking was getting the nismo header, stillen test pipes, tanabe y-pipe, and finally the rs-r exhaust...is this right?? or even possible??
help...or redirect to a thread with info...couldnt find anything

The left is stock, the right is how most people have theirs, (dual exhaust for more flow). Any other single exhaust looks alot like stock.
Spare the criticism on the right hand-diagram looking like a creature from nightmare before christmas.

Im laughing my *** off because the pic is linked from "How Stuff Works" 
you don't need a y-pipe with an RS*R. you'll feel a little different in accelaration, i don't know i guess, because the sound it makes? i used to get a lot of compliments including rednecks, lol.my brother said, it even sounds like a mustang with flowmaster!
