Default intake question

besides aestheitcs, is there really any gain by going with an aftermarket intake versus a stock with a K&N drop in?

with the location of the airbox on our cars, it seems like its in a pretty ideal location. so are the aftermarket CAI's or WAI's just expensive shiny pieces?

How can you say no??? The stock air intake is small, placed in a crappy location and RESTRICTIVE!!! This is a no braineR people, a CAI hopefully is located outside of the engine bay, bringing in cool air to the VQ.. put down the pipe, slowly back away from the pipe, slowly back away, no more rocks for either of the 2 of you

It has it's up and downs but both are minimal. If you do go with an intake the short rams are much better than the full CAI, but just a filter isnt bad either. The one thing I've noticed with the intake is that it smooths out the revs a bit at the higher end but thats about it.

My brother has an RX-8 and a last year he was thinking just like you. He purchased an AEM CAI system that extends the filter down in the front bumper...sure he got that "SICK INTAKE SOUND" but what he also got was a nasty-dirty-wet filter in a few months, his rpm's would fall and a few times his car even stalled at a light...embarrassing...he has to clean the filter every few weeks, and if it rained, he has to make sure the damn thing is dry.....if you're willing to purchase that kind of an intake for a few unnoticeable hp, do me favor and hand over your car to someone who's not such a dumb***.

common sense says: purchase a 2nd filter and have it clean & pre-oiled ready to go in a lb zip lock bag, so yes it is kinda a pain in the a$$ to replace the dirty filter. I choose this route, and I too have the foam insert designed from Nismo ( Designed to prevent inadvertent water ingestion). The process is not as difficult as you make it sound, I usually change mine approx every 3 or 4 months, I may be more mechanically inclined than your brother or youself though.

So I guess we should talk about rx8's on the Maxda forum. I can see where it would be embarrasing to be seen in a Mazda, so I truly feel for your brother

These Genuine NISMO R-Tune components have been custom engineered to upgrade and personalize your Nissan 350Z with performance technology from Nissan Motorsports International. The Genuine NISMO Cold Air Intake offers a 8.7 HP and 10.4 lb-ft increase at the front wheels by using the denser, colder air intake. This is mandrel-bent 6061 aluminum 3\'\' tubing that maintains a consistent inside diameter and is designed to prevent inadvertent water ingestion. Includes precise bolt-on installation instructions and reuseable washable air filter.

i dont feel like i should HAVE to have a stand by air filter for every time it rains... the stock airbox gets its air fron the very front of the engine bay, if you just install one of the breather holes it is getting cold air rammed in from outside the bay. $50 to get all the performance of a $200+ CAI.

and this statement in bold, sorry, but that just lost all credibility for you...

You also shouldn't believe manufacturers claims regarding CAI hp/torque gains either.

My resources are this board, along with the numerous other owners who have installed cai's on our Z's. About all they are good for is a great sound at 4500+rpm. The power gain is negligible, in fact, many users find using a CAI instead of SRI results in a power loss (NA motors).

So you go right on ahead and trust what those manufacturers are telling you and ignore what owners have experienced.

I bet you would enjoy the performance gains from this http://www.turbonator.com/

After all, the owner says you can get 20-35 extra horsepower from it. They wouldn't stretch the truth, now would they?

This is a sad day indeed

And replacing your headlight fluid with the red high performance Motul Headlight Fluid adds 15 HP to the tailpipes!
