Okay why don't I try to help the situation a little since I owned a Mr2 and I own a Z.
What you have put together is a great idea for the MR-S, it won't really work on the Z. The main reason is first the shield is aluminum and aluminum will become heat soaked very quickly compared to plastic (OEM airbox material).
The next concern is the MR-S's radiator is in the front of the vehicle while the intake and engine is in the rear, but the Z's is in the front right next to the airbox. If you have a aluminum cover around your air filter, it will become hot very quickly because of the radiant heat generated by the radiator therefore you'll lose power.
Your best cold air alternative (if you have to build something), would be to build a snorkel hose going from the OEM airbox inlet to the front of the car like the gruppe-m intake, and drop in a aftermarket drop in paper filter like the blitz which I mentioned before.
Heat will rob you of power, plastic is a great deterrent of heat compared to metals.

You all sure do put a lot of thought and effort into something that has very little chance of making your car much faster.
That being said, I believe that you'd actually hurt flow by addng that thing, and will agree that the stock air box with a drop in filter is better...

Thanks for pointing it out. You are right, I noticed on MR-S that air sucked in from the side vents does not only flow to the air filter but also cools down the aluminum heat shield fast enough but it doesn't for the Z. I mentioned carbon fiber few replies up. And yes, I got that idea from the gruppe-m intake too.
Thanks again for the notes and picture! Helped a lot. I will keep you updated for the carbon fiber heatshield!
