Default Exhaust buzzing question...

I just put an Injen true dual exhaust system on my 07 Z, and it sounds amazing - I love it. However, there has developed a buzzing/rattling when I accelerate from 1-2500rpm, and it's getting f ing annoying. Any suggestions?

If theres rattling, then your exhaust is hitting something when it vibrates. Have a look under your car and feel aroudn the piping for any areas where it can touch (after it has cooled of course).

You should also check for that black metal protective housing (i dont know what its called or what it covers) but its above the right canister. I had to remove that becuase the exhaust would hit it and make rattles.

It's weird you make this thread too. I'm leaving to my shop to get this fixed now. Will let you know.

mine has done that since i put the headers on and the only conclusion i have come to is if u take off the muffler and drive around it stops so the problem is in the muffler but i got pulled over in 10 mins for no muffler

Just got back. This is your answer right here. My mechanic had to remove the black bracket and weld it back down to a slightly different location. Look underneath your car, and you'll likely see the exhaust close to a little black box - even if you think you have clearance, you need a good inch to prevent contact. I had the very same problem as you, buzzing in that same RPM region.

Take it a reputable shop in your area and demonstrate the rattle to them.

Hopefully my buzz is gone away for good - it didn't do it once on the way home.

Here's a quick image - the part circled in red, it's located on the passenger side.

I'll run outside and get you a quick snap of it.

As you can see, even with the OEM exhaust, the black plate is pretty close to the elbow of the pipe - so imagine how much closer it is when it's a true dual sitting there. Before, I believe the plate was much more to the left, and right above the elbow. Now it's been moved out of the way altogether. To best illustrate all of this, I left the picture huge intentionally. Here's how much space I have now (click the link):

I believe that's the evap canister and heat shield. A tech was able to move it slightly for me when I installed teh amuse. No rubbing/no buzzing. I've seen some people stick a piece of insulating tape bw the exhaust pipe at the shielding, but that will only cause buzzing/vibrations. You must get enough clearance b/w the exhaust pipes and that evap canister and shielding. You can take off that shielding and put defi cool tape on it.

I appreciate the help - I think I'll take it to a shop and let them take care of it - it's a small price to pay to set off car alarms

Were you able to resolve the rattling issue? If so how did you do it? My mechanic bent the black box a little, but I still get some rattle. Thanx!

You totally removed the black box? Is it not a heat shield for a fuel line? I was wondering if it's safe to remove it.

if youre not comfy with that, you can shield the area and wrap that part of the exhaust with some insulating tape. Personally, im not too worried about it.

No, it's been moved out of the way. Look at the pictures.
