Not much different than a dyno.

I have heat rapped my K&N typhoon with DEA heat reflect tape!

Did the intake tube and all the air box.

Before after driving i could not keep my hand on the air box and the intake tube was realy hot to.

Now after the heat rap its only just warm! result! lol..

That's definitely the right idea, and I tried that too, but partial throttle (with the clutch in) just doesn't have enough air flow compared to WOT under load.

You really need to slam the throttle to get it to cool down in any reasonable amount of time. But then there is a drawback to that too....

If its enough reving to cool down the intake system, its also enough to get the engine hot. And hot engine coolant also reduces engine power too... So there is a balance that needs to be maintained. Sustained reving of the engine before a dyno pull isn't good either.

The best solution was to simply wrap the intake.

I just ordered this for the straight part of the intake tube:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=THE%2D13575

And this for curves, bends, and odd shapes (like the MAF sensor):

I think I'll try to insulate the airbox as much as I can too.

Thats why you get MSD 2STEP. =D That thing is sweeeeeeeeet, especially if you're boosted....some people claim its the best $400 they ever spent AFTER boost and tuning costs...

Alright you guys can try out what you want...but we've tried it on the dyno on IS300s and got freakn heatsoak. What would actually be more effective is not to wrap the pipe, but as shown in the pics, either get a heatshield, or warp your current one. That would provide much better cooling that just wrapping up a pipe...

Just ordered a turbo blanket to wrap my stock airbox in:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

After fully heat shielding the entire intake, I wonder how much the air heats up once it's in the plenum? I have a thermo gasket between the lower collector and the engine, but the engine bay heat will still soak through the plenum itself... Maybe I should also wrap the plenum assembly in a turbo blanket too~ Jk Lol! :-)

On the stock plastic intake tube it might help a little, as the plastic doesn't conduct heat like aluminum CAI piping will do (the OP asked about on a CAI). As far as aluminum piping, I'll just say that any sort of insulation works both ways. You're just trapping heat IN the pipe with heat wrap because it's already heated from direct contact points with the motor.

But really, I wouldn't expect to see much of a gain anyway. I guess it's a matter of perspective and anything less than 5whp isn't really worth the amount of work invested. I mean, at most I would expect you to maybe see a difference of 1-3whp peak on a 2nd+ dyno pull. It would make very little difference on the street.

I'm always amazed to see the lengths the NA folks on this forum go through to gain 1whp.

Although ridiculous at times, one could also argue that, the 1hp gain is what its all about.

On test results that me and a few others have done by wrapping our intake tube and intake boxes, we saw a drop of 30 degrees.

just curious at what contact that drop occured? were you monitoring the AIT located in the maf or using an infrared thermometer?

for those of you interested in this, i just wrapped my k&n typhoon intake and intake box with the heat reflecting tape. drove like 40 min on the high way then came back, the intake and box were much cooler than usually are. thought it worked well. who knows about hp though. maybe 1 or 2?? idk

Just wrapped my intake and air box. After watching IATs before and after the mod with Cipher, I noticed no appreciable difference in intake temps while the car was moving above 30mph.

However, while stopped at a trafficic light or being stuck behind some slow-@ss grandma in a minivan, I noticed my AITs were 15C to 20C cooler with the intake & airbox wrapped!

A cool inexpensive mod. :-)

Thanks Jonny! The air box was a little awkward to wrap cause of all the odd shaped corners and such... But it's really no harder than wrapping x-mas presents~ Lol! :-)
