Question 350Z Exhaust System Observation

It seems as though from looking at all the different combinations of exhaust systems out there that the power increase is coming from the intermediate pipes!!!

Look at it: Nissanperformancemag only recorded 2 hp increase with the B&B Triflow & the Borla muffler-only system from this forum does little to nothing for power or looses power. I don't have the specifics on the other "muffler only" systems but I haven't heard anybody raving about huge power increases!?!

On the other hand, custom cat back systems, Y-pipe systems, the Borla True Dual, the Injen ,the Stillen and even the NISMO systems are the ones producing the power!!!

Fujitsubo's Y pipe gives 5 hp by itself, the Japantrix Y + intermediate pipe system give 11 hp and then of course the total systems give the 9 - 15 we've all read about here. But if the NISMO system consists of the Fujitsubo Y-pipe and a NISMO muffler produces only 9 hp then the my only conclusion is that the mufflers are worth 1 - 4 hp and that's it!!!! It looks to me like the factory muffler is fine and can handle the flow.

VW/Audi 1.8T stock exhausts can handle 40 - 50% more power with out blinking an eye --- the dyno of those long tube headers recently posted showed 17 hp on here gain through the stock muffler!!! I think the Z's muffler can more than handle extra flow and isn't the bottle neck, I mean the stock units ain't exactly quiet....

I think that I'm going to go with a Y-pipe and B-pipe alone and keep the stock cans. You can't feel the extra 1 - 3 hp on a 290+ hp engine!! I want the power and torque, too old for all the noise.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like a pretty good theory to me and if you don't really care for changing the sound, by all means leave the stock muffler(s). It makes sense that most of the restriction would be in other areas, like the Y-pipe.

Interesting concept, makes a lot of sense. The Y-pipe does advertise 5 rwhp, and the nismo exhaust says 6 rwhp. The nismo muffler must make 1 HP, lol. Never really thought about that. You said something about a B-pipe, where is that??

the b pipe is the pipe with the resonator between the y and the muffler.

just make sure to go with a proven design. It may cost more, but I tried the 'muffler shop custom' and lost power.

I am thinking of going with the Fujitsubo Y-pipe and Japantrix B-pipe then I'll dyno hoping for 10 rwhp and a deeper raspier sound. Will post when done....funny thing is it'll cost more me than just throwing on the Borla true dual but I like to experiment

from the exhaust testing with the ECU, we saw little gains from a modified Y pipe and catback ... but the test pipes gave some really good results..

stock exhaust system is fantastic.. along with the stock air box.. the only things that an NA Z would really want to change imho is the headers and cats.. thats pretty much it...

the stock exhaust is great for mid-range grunt, but if you're looking for highend power.. then yes. i would suggest swapping out to a straight thru single pipe or perhaps the borla.. but i'm not convinced that an NA Z needs to swap out the entire exhaust system...

Cheston,

The Y-pipe that you guys tested, was it designed similar to Top Secret?

I have the Japtrix Y-pipe (Top Secret spin off) and B-Pipe, and according to their dynos, it produced 11 HP with the stock muffler.

This is what my current set up is.

nah. the Ypipe Design we had was quite similar to stock design, but slightly larger diamter, and it prolonged the 'connection' until the very end..

not that great of a design... i think a company sent it to us for testing.... kinda disappointing.. but the stock muffler is still awesome.. good choice frank

off topic...the cool thing is.. we're gonna be testing/tuning the Technos Ecu with Crawford plenum and headers soon... and i'm sure Doug's products will live up to the fame for mad hp gains...

Hi-Tech have produced an exhaust in Australia which has been tested at 16-18rwkw gain.

Two member in the Australian regional forums have them....You might want to read the 2 threads we have going on the subject.

BTW they have a store in the US, can't believe you guys haven't woken up to this one yet ...

ps... pls don't ask me to convert... 18kw is about 24hp i guestimate!

Sweeet! I'lll be getting the ECU when you guys optimized it for the Crawford Plenum and headers. In my case, it will be the NISMO ones.

Looking forward to the info/results.
