Default 07 Nismo: TP/exhaust problem.

I am new to the site, but I have searched and read 1 million posts about this topic, but I have a few questions that I cant really seem to find a definite answer to.

Last week I installed Berk Test Pipes on my 07 Nismo. So my exhaust system consists of the following:

Stock headers->Berk test Pipes->stock Y-pipe->Nismo catback exhaust. looking under the car the piping diameters are all the same except the Y-pipe. IT is smaller by ~1/4 to 1/2 inch. Apparently the "catback" Nismo exhaust is really just a "Y-pipe back."

What I am having a problem with is the rattle snake that seems to have made a home in my exhaust system.

I have tried about everything I can to get rid of this rattle, but with no luck.
I have swapped gaskets, removed all head shield on the Y-pipe, and still have the rattle @ 2500-3000 rpm while accelerating and also around 1600-1800 rpm as I am decelerating. This seems to be the usual problem I have read. What I have noticed is that if I slowly accelerate rather then nail it, the rattle doesnt appear.

The sound does seem to come from the expansion portion of the y-pipe.

So my questions are:

Will getting an aftermarket y-pipe that is larger in diameter fix the rattle?

Can I just get a muffler shop to weld a piece of pipe on the stock y-pipe to get rid of the expansion area?

Is there a resonator fix for the y-pipe systems like the magnaflow x-pipe for the dual systems?

I dont mind spending money to get rid of the problem, but I dont want to go down the wrong path and waste money. I dont want to put the stock cats back on but I am almost to that point.

I dont want my $40K Z to sound like a $5 ricer burner anymore! Any help is greatly appreciated.

will it fix the rattle? no. that little hissing snake thing is because of the test pipes. I had the same thing on my nismo.

r you sure the rattle isnt rasp? It could be because of the 2.5 tp's to the restrictive stock y pipe

with the car jacked up i can i give it gas and see the expansion point in the y-pipe vibrate. the sound is def. coming from that section. it would be different if it was coming from the tailpipe, but it seems to be coming from under the car.

I am thinking that it is because of the smaller y-pipe, but i dont want to spend $ on a new one if it isnt going to be the solution.

in many threads people talk about this problem but the threads end and there isnt a definite solution in the thread. i am wondering if the people solved the problem of just got sick of trying to fix it.

people that have the dual exhaust and test pipes use the magnaflow x-pipe to solve that rattle/rasp problem, so there has to be a solution like this for us with y-pipes.

The sound is rasp. Rasp sounds like a small rattle like you would hear if the heat sheild on an exhaust was loose. ting ting ting with some hiss in it. Rasp eminates from the point of the pulse problem not the tail pipe. I will come from the TP or the Y wich ever is causing the problem.

The 07-08 nismos have factory Y and mid the muffler is the only change. Unless you installed a s-tune cat back?

the exhaust is what ever comes with the 07 nismo minus the cats. i took it today to my local muffler shop. the sound is coming from the point in the y-pipe where they merge into one. they said they could build me a custom y-pipe for $70 out of 2 1/2" that would match the test pipes and catback since the stock y-pipe is smaller than both. this is a good deal but i dont want to waste money if it doesnt fix it.

does anyone have a y-pipe that doesnt have the flex section in it? the shop said they would make the y-pipe without the flex section. they also mentioned swapping out the stock resonator of after the y-pipe to a beefier one.

what do you all think about this?

TP = rasp A larger y might cut down on some and the larger resonator but it will not get rid of all of it. I had TP then switch to HFC (metalic) and still had the rasp. So back to stock for me. I hate rasp...

you are being too sensitive..

i acted the same way when I got my Berk cats and later realized that there were no problems, it was just me..

i'm not trying to be too sensitive about it, but there is a problem and i dont think that it is Rasp. there is a big difference between a raspy exhaust and a rattleing exhaust. i have a couple things i am gonna try tomorrow. besides i have read thread about this rattleing and the only people that can seem to get rid of it are the ones with true dual.

i have read many threads today about cracked y-pipes mostly stock ones and the rattling sound they make where the 2 pipes become 1. i am gonna take a closer look at it tomorrow.

the thing is i dont want to go too far because it kind of goes against buying the nismo in the first place.

my demon is the inner modder in me that always has to come out and cant leave anything alone.

good way to tell it's your test pipes is putting on stock cats. if the sound goes away, there you have it. i've been through this set up. I've been through the following combos on my nismo: nismo exhaust with kinetix resonated test pipes, nismo exhaust with stock y pipe and kinetix rsonated test pipes, nismo exhaust with berk high flow cats...

and guess what? hissing from all of it. now i'm running just nismo cat back with the stock cats, sounds perfect again.

thanks for all the feedback.

so i am gonna put the cats back on for now. i guess i will hold on to the TP until i get a true dual. i think that the problem is because of the stock y-pipe but i am not gonna sink any more $ into a single exhaust. i talked to Berk and to a local Z shop and havent come up with any fixes for now.
