Default Test Pipe Question

So I was doing a bunch of reading on test pipes and exhausts in general. I don't necessarily need the performance gains, I'm just looking for the sound that I will get from the exhaust.

Instead of buying a full system, would a good alternative for sound be to just install a test pipe? Obviously, I'd have to get a good quality one, but I'm looking for sound more than performance. Later down the line, I will work on performance. Also, I figured that since I have a stock exhaust, it might give me the sound I'm looking for while still retaining the stock look.

Another thing I was thinking about is this whole "raspy" discussion. Are there any sound clips out there of an exhaust that is "raspy" vs. one thats not? I've heard a lot of exhausts in my time and don't know of any that could have eben described as raspy.

You have entered the subjective world of sound. Rasp has lots of descriptions. Primarily it is a unwanted side effect of exhaust components such as headers and test pipes.

I do not think it is a big deal. Other members cry like little babies about rasp.

i MAY know what it is referring to... sometimes I hear those ricey tuners with an exhaust, then all of a sudden it sounds like its bubbling water or something... like its fizzling or something. Hard to describe, but is that it? Or the general idea?

Also, my other question was the first underlined part, which I guess is the more important question of the two.

Instead of buying a full system, would a good alternative for sound be to just install a test pipe?

Oh good, thanks for the input.

Any suggestions then for mainly just getting a better sound out without having to shell out the hundreds to a grand on the full system?

I see some decent stuff from Megan Racing but never heard of them up to recent.

I've been in the truck scene and motorcycle scene most of my life, so I don't know what names are good and what names are mediocre and that one just sounds kinda odd without having any prior knowledge to it.

Any reliability to them?

The selection on exhausts is pretty endless for the 350Z!!!

Check out my site...I have been inputing products for the last few weeks...and still not done...there are tons of them to meet most budgets!

There is tons of info on exhaust systems on these forums...just do a search. Just remember...everyone is an expert here and knows everything about everything!!! so take it all with a grain of salt!

Isn't gutting the cats the same as putting a test pipe in?

Megan products belong on that rice mobile GSX of yours.

BTW, did you ever race your buddy? https://my350z.com/forum/drag/390063...al-race-6.html

Funny how you lashed out at DavidV for him saying you were going to run a handful of 14.3s, followed by you running a wicked 14.5! https://my350z.com/forum/drag/395628...ml#post7579040

Copy machine? No, we use this thing called the DIG-I-TAL CAM-E-RA to take pics then click the upload button. Woohoo!

YOU drive the world's fastest 4cyl?! Actually, the fastest 4cyl production car was the Lotus S4 turbo. It may or may not be today. Rule of thumb for me - if it is FWD I simply don't care (yes I know the GS-X was AWD). Everyone knows someone who knows this guy who read about this car in Puerto Rico that runs an x or y quarter mile. All we internet thugs care about is what YOU run in YOUR car, not what Johnny's cousin Bret and his myspace buddy John run in their cars. I do know of 7, 8, and many 9 and 10s Zs. To the same point, they don't matter.
