Default Does An Exhaust Really Make Gains?

Other than the Motordyne dyno's we've all seen, is there any evidence showing gains on the dyno with other popular exhaust systems?

Talking with a few Z owners, opinions have been mixed. One says they do, another says the gains don't justify costs yada yada without tune and supporting mods and the other says a good designed y-pipe with test pipes on the OEM exhaust will rival a lot of exhaust systems.

What is the true answer here?

Money is tight around the holidays, but I do want a new exhaust. I just got rid of the "droney" X02. I didn't like the sound with test pipes. I'm now on the OEM exhaust with resonated test pipes. On the ever so accurate butt dyno, it says I lost some good mid range torque.

Sorry for the long post, but I did search fo actual dyno's without solid answers.

if $'s tight keep it in your bank account. Yes there are gains but they're minimal might even lose power in parts of the power band. Your bank acc will be happier than your butt dyno so do it later on.

if money is tight keep your money. By theory freeing up intake and exhaust restriction should always add HP. How much on new model cars i dont know. you would be doing it more for sound.

By the time you add true duals, headers, intake manifold, and Cold air, you'll feel more power but you'll spend thousands. Good luck

You don't really lose HP from adding new exhaust, like jiggy said...whenever you change the amount of air flow going to and coming from your engine, it will increase power.

Flip side is you can lose mid-range torque like you said, especially if you're using TD, not as much backpressure is generated, so you lose torque. The stock exhaust has a nice note to it, but it is quite restrictive compared to aftermarkets. The real question is are you comfortable enough to spend $1000 on something that will change the sound, and minimal HP gains?

I know I would...

Thanks for the responses.

Now the real question is, does anyone have proof of gains (other than the usual Motordyne set-ups)?

Yeah the money is tight as with most Americans during the seasons, but once the holidays are done, game on. I don't mind paying good money for a mod that delivers results.

Say that money isn't an issue. The question is, does an exhaust make power and where are the dyno's? So, is Motordyne the only proven exhaust to make power?

Same here, you really feel it at higher speeds/RPM. Other day I took a lonely road and got the car up 145. When I went past 120, just felt the car kick foward. Car just feels like it gets faster and faster with an aftermarket exhuast

Yeah we all know the Motordyne exhaust has gains, but what about the others?

I heard cutting a huge hole in your muffler can get some serious gains

I know one of the reasons I went with the exhaust I have is because it had been shown give a pretty good gain (relatively speaking).

I just picked a new Fujitsubo Legalis R exhaust shipped for under 900 bucks. The gains will most likely be minimal but the sweet exhaust note and look is worth the dollars IMO. I'll probably run my stock y-pipe but will end up purchasing a Motordyne XYZ pipe once I con my wife into letting me spend more dollars on my Z.

I'm so tempted to dyno the XYZ pipe on the OEM exhaust.

Any thoughts on possible outcome?
