Default Cheap Mods for Loud Exhaust?

I really like the looks of my stock exhaust, and its in great shape with low miles, just looking for a louder tone - without spending 1200 on the Nismo! Yes Im cheap.

Has anyone experimented with simply welding in a Borla muffler or similar and keeping the rest of the setup tips etc. for a cheap upgrade?

Are there any Baffles or anything I can remove to make the stock exhaust louder?

I don't believe anyone has ever made a custom exhaust.

the easiest way is to stab holes in your muffler. have fun

Im not talking about a custom exhaust Im just talking about replacing the muffler itself and keeping all of the bent tubing, pipes, tips, etc. - lots of people do this all of the time on other vehicles..

With an aftermarket exhaust you are basically paying a TON of money just for stainless steel or what not which is a waste in IMHO

Im thinking something like this, I mocked this up with a Borla XR-1 - not sure if they have a model with the right size piping, but this is if they did - simply weld either side and then weld on the two hangers and your done - 130.00 muffler..

The reason I want to do this is because all of these aftermarket exhausts except probably the NISMO seem to give the car that "ricer" look, and I don't want that - or also they cut the cars ground clearance big time on angles, speed bumps, etc.

Although, as I said if there are any baffles or even the cats to remove that change the sound significantly I would do that too.

If people do this to other vehicles what is stopping you from doing it?

But seriously, by the time you get done searching for and buying the right style universal muffler, paying to have this all fitted and welded, you could just buy an exhaust from the marketplace..........

About $500 will get you something decent. You'll probably spend $300 on your Frankenstein set up anyway.

Look at the stock set up. One inlet, two outlets. How is that Borla muffler gonna work with one inlet, one outlet?

Yes, didn't get a clear image of the stock muffler to see that. So all you need then is a 3 inlet racing muffler like so right?

I have no problem cutting out the cats there is no emissions here - or usually I just hollow them out with a hammer and punch, that has worked in the past nicely for my trucks. How does that sound on a 350?

This one has a single inlet, dual outlet but the stock muffler is not set up the same way. The stock muffler has an inlet and one of the outlets on the same side.

I believe all of the inlets/outlets are advertised as universal so you can do what you want with them if I read the description right. But I may be wrong, I know what your saying, but just trying to show an example - there is probably a muffler for sale out there for 100 bucks that will work and I have a mig welder...

Edit: read the page description again and not sure if they are universal. I'll have to look around more for one with universal inlets and outlets..

Go to youtube and listen for yourself. I have heard a couple Z's and G's with stock exhaust and test pipes or HFC's and I do not like the sound. Raspy is the only word I can think of. Check out the youtube video of a 350Z with the resonator on the mid pipe cut out. This might be the right mod for YOU. Search for "350z resonator delete".

If you're stuck on doing this just remove the rear muffler section and buy a single aftermarket muffler. Angle it the way you want it, fab up the piping to connect to the stock mid pipe, and do the bumper tuck.

Well my problem is that right now the only exhaust I like is the NISMO because it looks stock - but I have trouble coughing up 1200.

The other exhausts that are cheaper seem to be big cans and they all look too ricer or they cut down on clearance and will scrape everywhere.

So my goal was to keep the stock tips both of them if I did this, but that is why I was posting to see if anyone had tried it - Im not saying its possible. It seems like right now the options would be 1. Text Pipes 2. Drill Holes or 3. Cough up 1200 dollars for a nismo, or 4. put a cheap big can on the end which I dont really want to do, but for the money I might...

Check out the Megan OE RS exhaust. Tips might not be your style but you can weld your stock tips on instead.

I have the 3" version of the Top Speed N1 and it is VERY loud and has a very deep tone. Found it for $150 last year in the Marketplace. But you need to take some extra strength Tylenol before and after a long drive.
