Exhaust Comparison Chart
I am getting new exhaust in a couple of weeks for my 350Z. I like the sound of the Nissan but a mechanic convinced me to go for the performance increases of Stillen. So I decided to go for the Stillen. I found this chart and I am now thinking of going with the Borla. Anyone here have the Borla True Dual exhaust? What do you think of it? I don't want a rice patty sound, love a muscle car sound but don't want that either. I'd like to keep that exotic sound.
If the chart below does not show up correctly, you can find it at

I've seen hundreds of post on this subject, the more I look, the more confused I become. Nismo looks and sounds good, Stillen ehh. Borla looks good but lots of pieces and I haven't heard them yet.
I have the Borla on my G35 coupe, as well as the Borla headers and the Random Technology cats. My sound is slightly impacted by the fact I am putting more throught it with an FI unit.
The supercharger was the first mod. The exhaust note was a bit louder, but not much, on the stock exhaust system.
The headers and catback went on next. There was little change in the sound from the stock, just a little bit deeper, but not really louder. If one were making the change for sound results, it would be a disappointment. If you wanted minimal sound change, you would be thrilled.
The RT cats went next. Significant difference. Tone deepened and mellowed, the header "growl" came out under acceleration, and above the 4000 rpm level it gives a deeper roar. Not obnoxious, very satisfying. I like it a lot.
The Stillen is a heavy unit. It is well built. It sounds great. I wanted to drop the weight, and the Borla was a lot less expensive. The weight, not the money, was important to me in this choice.
HP. Hmmm. Mods are not "additive" in releasing hp. And the order you put them on has an effect too. When I put the headers and cat back on I actually experienced a DROP in hp and torque on my FI engine when I got it dyno tuned that day. That was a puzzler to be sure. And it was running leaner too.
Put the RT cats on next. Big sound improvement, and 20hp+ gain at the rear wheels per the dyno tune. And by the way, running real lean again. Good to get the tune on your a/f and keep it under 4000 rpm until you do.
Why? Possibly it was that the cats were a "bottleneck" at least when you run FI. Possibly it is the ECU, reacting to an O2 sensor read of the increased and cooler flow and impacting the programming. Just be careful if you are running FI and start playing with your "breathing", either intake side or exhaust side, to get yourself tuned up on your a/f and ignition timing so you do not get early detonation and blow a hole in a piston.
Enough safety message.
The Borla is sounding great and I like it very much. The Stillen is a good sounding unit too and the fellas I know that have it are satisfied. A little deeper in tone to my ear. But costs more and weighs more.
Hope that helps. Enjoy it, whatever the choice.

I am skeptical of borla; the whole 2 pipes into one muffler is a bit questionable to me; not that it matter; it has the H pipe anyway. I think I know the purpose of the Hpipe; the viper has it because it has side exhaust and you only heard 5 cylinders from each side leading to a farm tractor sound; so they put in the crossover to let the pulses mingle.
but we have rear exhaust; so whats the point? also as a result there are if anything; more bends in the pipes keeping the sharp bends to go sideways into the muffler.
stillen is similiar but without the hpipe; and it has 2 parralel mufflers.
injen would just seem to be without question the most free flowing exhaust system with the least bends. of course free flowing isnt always better; but its odd that of the 3 listed they order them borla>injen>stillen... borla would seem the most close to stock with the bends yet gets the most increase... while injen being the least restrictive and farthest from stock gets the second most...
doesnt make very much logical sense.
psst... vendors; do a proper shootout with some results that are impartial and confirmed. I havent seen such a thing yet; this whole 23hp gain thing is nuts and unbeleivable.

IMO, I think the HP gains are not to be completed trusted, I think that the dual systems increase the same amount of HP as a single with a y-pipe.
I think that what you will look for most is looks and quality.

I personally couldn't be any happier with my Borla true dual. I installed it before the supercharger and when I first started it up I thought "DAMN, that sounds sexy" Low rumble at idle and throaty growl during acceleration. I personally love the sound almost V-8 sounding.
It's very easy to install and of very good build quality. Plus the price is pretty sweet.

There are people that have posted on this board with $6000 in n/a mods to their vehicle that have barely seen 20rwhp. Not to mention, that gain is over a pretty small portion of the power band. I think Doug @ Crawford said he put on an aftermarket exhaust (on a heavily modded Z) and noticed almost nothing on a dyno.
I have never heard of anyone changing their cat-back exhaust and improving their 1/4 mile time.
