Which header to choose???
Hello guys. My name is Stian from Norway. I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with.
After tuning the SR20DET for 15years, I have now moved on to a 100% NA build and it cant be any other better engine that the VQ
..
My goal is very simple, I would like to try getting to the 350whp and after reading many threads here I think I know how to get there.
The 3 biggest hurdle seems to be cams, intake and exhaust. I know that there are other factors involved but those 3 are the biggest.
Here is the setup im going for:
-VQ35DE (Non revup)
-Wiseco piston and Eagle Rods
-ARP studs from top to bottom.
-Revup oilpump
-individual Throttle bodys from Jenvey.
-Motec M84 EMS
-JWT valvesprings (or Kelford)
-Kelford cams (302 intake/292 exhaust)
-JWT aluminium flywheel
The list will be longer but this is the main parts. As you can see the cams are very extreme but my car is not used on the streets, its a trackday car.
My biggest concern is the headers. I know the long tube manifold is the way to go but thats the problem. The engine is not going in a 350Z, its going to be used it a Toyota Starlet (rwd) racecar. And there is not room for big headers with very long runners. I have been looking at the options out there and have found two headers that I can use but im not sure on what to get.
Its the headers from Crawford and the Nismo R-tune header. The rest of the exhaust system is going to be a twin 2.5" setup. Is there anyone here that can give me a input on what to get.
Dont forget this is a racecar so im going for power and nothing else..

In order to reach your desired power level shorties aren't going to cut it.
Sounds like custom fabricated is your last option.
You'll be doing a lot of custom work anyways using those ITB's with that standalone. :P

I have done alot of custom work over the years so the ITB is no problem. But I have not made any headers before and I was hoping to getting around that part. But if that is what it takes im going to try. My impression was that the Crawford headers a long runner manifold in a short style package. Or is this wrong?

Fab your own....simple, don't think anything will translate over smoothly...
So get some shorties cut off the merge and fab to your liking!

In the pictures the engine has a Cosworth intake. But its for sale, I already have the Jenvey

Here is a picture of when I had a SR. It made 600whp at low boost

I have been looking at the VQ made by Nismo for the GT300 series and from those pictures I see no long headers? Yes this is a race engine made by nismo gurus but anyway, still no long runners??

holy **** no space Captain....
I'm no expert but looks like you gonna have to dump the exhaust out front past the crash bar to get some length on the exhaust. other than that I don't see anything fitting stock like in there.

.. So as you can see, no long runner here. But Im still interested in the Nismo engine. That beast puts out over 400hp and I cannot find any picture of this engine with long runners.
Is this the Nismo R-tune manifold?

What im thinking of is that on the picture nismo is using short runner headers on their engine, and that beast is pushing over 400hp. So way is my only alternative for getting to the 350whp long runner headers?? Everyone seems to say that if you want big power you also have to use long runners. But Nismo didnt need to.
Well there is no plug and play, but if I can use short headers and still make a desent amount power, the job to make it fit is much less. I have the DC headers here (that i not going to use) and I see no problem to make these fit with a little custom work. But I dont want to buy the Crawford or the nismo headers, then make them to fit but later find out that the headers cant do the job when im on the dyno..
