Which exhaust you thinking? I'd go for exhaust personally, but depending on how much money you are willing to put down TPs are the way to go.

Test Pipes will sound like scrap with OEM exhaust. If you don't have the budget to afford a full exhaust I would say to save up. Exhaust first then TP's

For performance, test pipes with up-rev tune hands down. Exhaust? wouldn't know. I run stock exhaust, resonator delete. My car doesn't sound good on the street, but when I race or get on it, it's fast as hell & that's when it sounds great.

First,it starts with the big question.Whats your budget?
IMO,everything related to your exhaust system is not an area to go for cheap.
In the long run you'll be sorry.
I'd start with a exhaust system. Many out there for sure. You want mild or wild?
Also, the name brands will give a good bolt on fit.As mentioned, test pipes will
give you max power(with a proper follow up tune). However, the negatives are they
are loud and smell.I'd suggest HFC's instead.I'm running a Nismo catback with
Z1 HFC's.I love the sound. At idle and low revs pretty mild.Get on it,sounds brutal.

test pipes, stock exhaust, and an electronic cutout for when you want it to be loud.

The first ever mod I did was an exhaust and man, did it sound like ****! I kinda wish I left it there.

Then I wanted more power, so I went HFC and got a Tune. Why HFC and not TP? Well, because I have a roaster and I don't want to smell gasoline every time I roll to a stop. Plus, I don't want to be THAT guy making everybody's eyes sting at the light. HFC will give you a fair % of the gain w/o the smell of TPs.

Unfortunately HFC (CNT) I got hissed bad and also created a good bit of rasp with the aftermarket exhaust. So, I wasted some more money on two new Y-pipes to get rid of the rasp. Hiss is still there.

Lesson here is: Option 1) If you just want a different exhaust note, get an exhaust and be done with it.
Option 2) If you want more power and don't care what your car sounds like, just get TP AND TUNE. Your car will smell like gas. Police may take notice if they roll behind you.
Option 3) If you want both, start researching and figure out what combination of TP/exhaust will meet you needs.

Cost analysis w/ cost of labor:
Option 1) Exhausts can be had from anything from 200 to 1500
Option 2) TP can be had for 200 to 550 and Tune can be from 400 - 800
Option 3) Option 1 + Option 2

I've always loved the sound of stock cats + Nismo S tune... It retained the VQ and was loud (3" mid pipe) at WOT. Currently I am running CNT HFC (200 cell) + XYZ HFC (200 cell) + Nismo S-Tune Mid Pipe and Muffler. Like I said earlier, the hiss is still there but at this point in time, I am happy with the way it sounds and the performance gains. Some might wonder, if you already have HFC, why add the HFC onto the XYZ? To be honest, the HFC alone was too loud for me. I am old and I want to get back to the stock + Nismo S w/o giving up a large percentage of the gains https://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9625613. Motordyne's R&D article shows that most of the power is made < 18" of the headers so the HFC on the XYZ should theoretically minimize the power loss. I don't have a dyno to verify this claim so please take it with a grain of salt.

Get both, but if you are really that limited on budget, get Exhausts 1st, then add Test Pipes.

Suggestion for you is Motordyne Shockwave TDX2 + ART Test Pipes if you want loud/aggressive. If you want to keep things mild, go with Nismo S tune + ART or don't get ART. You should save a bit more on the installation if you get both done at once, which is just common sense.

I would start with an exhaust and work on your way back.

Exhaust, man I swear if you were to walk behind my car while it was running you would get knocked out by the smell. Those test pipes are no joke with a exhaust lol.
