Default A before and after (MD XYZ Review)

After listening to a raspy exhaust every day for about 6 months I was on the verge of insanity. I had been running berk test pipes, stillen y pipe, and agency single. It sounded good at WOT but normal driving is embarrassing when your car sounds like it has taco bell sharts. I was left with a few options on how to get rid of this problem. I could put stock cats back in, swap out the agency power, or give the xyz with resonator a try. I'm beyond happy with my decision. From the quality of the part to how much of a difference it made, I understand why people love motordyne so much. Needless to say, I recommend this Y pipe.

Notes for daily driving:
Rasp: Gone. Some over 5k or when floored, but the car has TP's so this is no surprise.
Drone: The resonator didn't do much as far as cabin drone. However, the drone is less annoying
Exhaust note: Deeper than before, and sounds more like a VQ.

The XYZ also has flex joints, unlike the stillen Y. This is a small-ish detail but I'm more comfortable knowing the xyz isn't a solid piece.

Here's a comarison video. Sorry for the blurriness in the stillen clips...my brother didn't know how to use my camera

If you want drone and rasp eliminated completely I would recommend replacing berk pipes with Motordyne Art pipes. They made a HUGE difference in the tone of my setup... The increase in mid range torque was a plus as well!

That's my goal eventually. For now, the xyz was used and more affordable. Not to mention the install is much easier than art pipes. No drone sounds nice though haha

congrats on the change to xyz and nice write up and vid. Like mentioned above keep the ARTs on you list cuz you will be very impressed with the combo. You may just end up with the full tdx2 system haha!

Thank you! Tdx2 with art pipes is my favorite sounding exhaust setup so I think you may be right lol

I put test pipes on mine and hated it, too loud, raspy, etc.
My poor boy solution was to cut a piece out of the stock Y pipe and put a 12" cherry bomb in its place. The 2.5" slipped right over the pipe.
For 36$ I got rid of all rasp, it's a little louder than stock, but not obnoxious, just right for me. Not sure if there is any gain over cats, but sounds much better.

Thanks man I totally agree with you. Hearing it in videos I can't believe I drove around like that.

No,that's the DE one with the heat shield off. I trimmed the heat shield and put it back on. I installed band clamps after this pic and no leaks.

Blufc3s, your car sounds lovely. I want to copy your Y-pipe idea on my car. Can you list what exhaust components you are using in the airstrip video?

My 2003 Z has stock exhaust manifolds, Kinetix resonated test pipes, stock Y pipe, stock midpipe, and a 4 x 22 inch blast pipe instead of a muffler. Here is a video to compare the sound (skip to about 3:14):

Currently I have no rasp, but I want to get rid of some of the higher frequency notes in my exhaust and have it bellow like the one in the OP post.

Good to know there is one more z out there that DOESNT rock test pipes anymore. And for anyone still running them and think they sound "cool" from the inside of your car. Have someone drive your car for you so you can see what it sounds like from the outside.

Thanks
The exhaust is stock except for some flex test pipes and the cherry bomb glass pack part # 87522.
Off topic, but you will notice in the pic some hockey pucks between the jack stands and the car.
I cut a groove in them and velcro them to the car, so they stay there all the time.

Which y-pipe do you have? The straight pipe one, hfc, or the the other one?

Not sure what crappy combo you heard that has you thinking this is always the case. Any time I hear my car from the outside (usually when a shop tech is driving the car) it sounds even better than how I hear it on the inside. I have berk testpipes, not even resonated, and combined with the Injen exhaust I get compliments on the sound relatively often
