Default Tomei with xyz pipe

Anyone running a Tomei with xyz y pipe and testpipes/headers? Thinking about buying a xyz pipe. I'm tired of my Tomei y pipe blowing apart at the slip overs. I've tightened it down pretty right, don't want to damage anything. If I got the xyz it would be with the resonator. I found a vendor that can sell them for 420 shipped. Any insight? My y pipe has blown apart at the track twice and once on the street. I'm keeping my Tomei y pipe for now just incase I don't like the motordyne.

What do you mean by blowing apart? Saw your signature, you run boost at 17 psi, but the Tomei slip joint y pipe should not be coming apart if install correctly. Did you slip both left and right pipes all the way in (approximately 3" deep) and securely tight in down? When you slide in and hit that welded notch, then you know it is all the way in. It would be impossible for the Tomei y pipe to come apart by exhaust blow by pressure. I test and try to pull with both of my arms and I hardly move an inch when I finished install my Tomei exhaust and y pipe.

I push it in as far as possible till it stops. Will only happen during no-lift shifts and it backfires from ignition cut instead of fuel cut..this last time it took a few weeks to happen, but at the dragstrip going across the line bouncing off the rev limiter it blew apart. I do know what your talking about with the welds inside, cause I was checking it out when it was apart.

Well I ran into another issue with the y pipe. Sunday night I made a pull then heard a pop. My exhaust was wide open again. Took the car home and parked it. After work the next day I jacked the car up to fix it. After looking I found out that my y pipe had actually snapped in half at the bend on drivers side. It is a clean snap. I went to the road where it happened and there was my pipe.

Well the next day I called tomei in California. Just want to say they are great guys there! I told him what happened and he offered to replace it no questions. I just had to send them my y to them first.. I told him if was kinda a let down cause I was planning on taking the car to znationals this sat. He told me their president was also going to be there. Then he tells me he will ship me out a y pipe today and took my address. Cause as he put it "we can't have you going to znationals with a half assed exhaust". Got a tracking number already and it's scheduled to be here Friday. I can't thank the guys at Tomei enough for hooking me up!

Tldr; broke y pipe, called tomei, they shipped me one out same day for znationals

I was not going to buy thier y-pipe because of how low I am, but I'm glad they have such an awesome understanding of "shlt happening"....

Glad you'll be there in full glory!

Would heat wrapping it keep it hotter longer and prevent it from cooling to quick? So it wouldn't crack so easily?

Just FYI, I'll be at Z Nationals this weekend as well. I run momentum headers, test pipes, motordyne xyz w/straight pipe (ran the resonator first but it eventually cracked), and the tomei single.

I personally like the sound of the setup better with the motordyne y-pipe.

Track me down. I'm a judge this year. Just look for Renfro

Nice, can't wait to hear how the motordyne sounds on your car. I'm signed up for the dyno runs so everyone can hear my z in all her glory! Right now I put a stock y pipe on. Hoping this tomei shows up Friday.

Same thing happened when I had a shipping defect with my exhaust. Taka replaced it no problems. All I did was shipped mine back same as you and they shipped the same day they received my old one.

Has anyone experienced any cracking at the y-pipe since it doesn't run flex joints like the oem y pipe? I know the old nismo y pipes used to crack from what I read.

That looks bad. lol Glad you got it replaced. Taka is a cool guy. I'm telling you the people in japan really take pride in their product especially Tomei. Anyhow, I was just wondering if running that y pipe with no flex joint would cause anymore stress to it when the engine flexes during driving.

I think most of my problems came from my back firing or so. It broke right at the sharpest bend past the test pipes. I think I'll prolly still switch to the motordyne y. Don't really want to get rid of this tomei, might just hang it on the wall in garage or something. I'm just glad I found a company to stand behind their product and help me out.

If a y pipe fails like that it's probably for one of two reasons.

First, no flex joints and the little movement the engine naturally has stresses it enough to fail over time.

Second, you have a bad motor or trans mount causing a lot more movement and the lack of flex joints can't handle it.

That is clearly why I'm looking more into the Motordyne setup now.
