3", 3.5", & 4" intakes
So I get that aftermarket with the stock size give negligible gains, at best. On the 350Z group on Facebook, an intake question was asked and people raved about the 3.5" intake from AdminTuning. Someone produced a dyno chart showing 15 hp gains from one. I've seen a post on here as well showing the same results.
Is this snake oil or is there something to this? Is this only going to help with a forced induction car?
I do realize they require a tune, but I am going to get a dyno tune soon anyways to go with my bolt ons. (Injen SES cbe, 5/16" spacer, MREV2, and HFCs)

be it 3in, 3.5, or 4in...
I designed the LMT 4in intake at www.limpmodetuning.com
these gains are going to require a competent tuner... many tuners have struggled trying to tune larger bore intakes and the results were not good... Saul Nismo Knights has made gains with all these intakes as has LMT and others...
the LMT 4in has a heat shield and directs air to the filter. Others don't have this.
they're also on sale if using code myothertunersucks
will come with free basic pcv delete and free hood spacers to help with airflow.
like limp mode tuning on facebook and ask away.

I'm not trying to nut on this nor you as a fabricator nor you as a tuner ... your stuff looks good ...
but you're ultimately changing the dynamic of your intake. Increasing the diameter of your intake duct will decrease the velocity of your intake charge. A slower intake charge will decrease your VE and decrease engine output.
I'm sure nissan has thousands upon thousands of man-hours developing the most efficient intake track (from filter to valves) and when you modify a single part with no regard to the others you're only introducing inefficiencies.

So I emailed my dyno tuner today, who has made some 9 second Zs about this. Their response:
This is indeed snake oil. If 15hp at the wheels came out of these Id stock them and sell them by the dozens!

Loss of power down low, gain up high. Of course results will vary , all depending on what else is done to the car. Obviously parts that help with high rpm flow, will give better results.

i have a question tho. a bigger intake tube diameter could be 4 inches or 5 inches..but there would be a bottleneck around the throttle body in which air still comes through at 3 inches. So no matter how big of a intake you have..u are restricted at the throttlebody and plenum right?

has anyone tried re-tuning an otherwise OEM/100% stock setup? Did nissan push the limits on the timing? Did nissan build in a little bit of a cushion in their maps?
are you running an OEM MAF and OEM MAF housing?

In our testing of the 3.5" intake vs stock size intakes we came up with the following results:
AdminTuning 3.5" intake + NWP TB + tune vs Stillen CAI + Stock TB + tune = +16whp peak, +20wtq peak, gains everywhere.
AdminTuning 3.5" intake, stock TB + tune vs Nismo intake, stock TB + tune = +16whp peak, +13wtq peak, gains everywhere.
AdminTuning 3.5" intake, NWP TB + tune vs AEM CAI, NWP TB + tune = +24whp peak (this was an engine with BC 264 cams so it liked the large tube much more).

Are you referring to speed academy and their 15hp gains from trying a 4" intake over 3" with their S2000?
Cause the length, inlet of the filter, and how much cold air it's actually getting makes a huge factor as well. Also the size difference of our TB.. they were running open ITB's with a air box. Not to mention they used a cyclone inlet to help vacuums and air flow.
But general sense is bigger is usually better. But too big is just as bad as too small.
