Smile Exhaust

Hey im looking into getting a new exhaust for my Z. I've heard the Borla and NISMO are good. I was wondering what everyone thinks about these two. Or what exhausts do you guys recommend. Also can you guys say which exhaust sounds the best too. THanks

Exhaust is a personal taste thing.

Most people are gonna tell you to go with the set up they have.

I say NISMO

Run a search for tons of threads on exhausts.

you'll find which produce the most HP, Sounds/video clips, etc

pezeveng319,

Well, there are several factors to take into consideration when looking into a new exhaust system. What is it that you want? A nice sound, good horsepower gains, true dual? Is price a consideration? It depends on what you are looking for in an exhaust.

If you want it mainly for the sound, then out of the two systems you listed, I would go with the Nismo. The Borla exhaust is just slightly louder than stock, whereas the Nismo is a bit louder. If you want a really aggressive exhaust note, then look into the Injen or even the APEXi systems.

If you are more concerned with performance, then the Borla is a good choice because it has shown very good gains on the dyno over most other exhaust systems.

Another consideration is if you want a true dual systems or not? The Borla is a true dual from the cats back, while the Nismo is a single pipe back from the Y pipe.

How about price? There is a pretty wide range anywhere from the low $400's all the way up to over $2000.

Basically it all boils down to what you are looking for. Here is a good site with sound clips of most types of exhaust systems for Z's (and G35's).

Hopefully that helps you out.

Keep in mind that the Borla has two pipes of the same diameter as the original exhaust. The NISMO pipe is larger (76mm vs 60mm) than the original exhaust resulting in a 60% larger area. Unless your other mods are going to push more than 1.6X exhaust out of the engine, it's not going to make a whole lot of difference anyway. Also, both the Borla and NISMO join into a single muffler so it could be argued that the "trueness" of the dual is lost.

Finally, the NISMO is three pieces, the Borla is in 17 pieces.

As you can see they both have advantages and disadvantages. If it's the sound you're truely interested in, try to find some nearby Z's that you can hear them in person. That will probably drive your final decision in the end.

I have the Nismo exhaust and it sounds great. You're going to get many opinions on exhaust here. Bottom line is do your research and get what YOU want. Good Luck!

how old are you?

you think the exhaust should be felt and not heard? or you want it all?

figure out what you want, theres few exhausts that have their strongpoints and reasons to buy. borla for example is the best way to get your gains without increasing sound, that can be good or bad.

I went with injen, cause I wanted the sound, and I got it, and I love it.

nismo would be somewhere inbetween, but is not a dual pipe as the injen and borla are. injen is 4 peices, which is nice.

Let's be fair here, I have the stock exhaust right now, so I am a bit impartial to any of the exhausts. With the Borlas, it is still two pipes, even if they are 60mm each, that is still a greater area than a single 76mm pipe. Also, Borla himself has said many times that the exhausts remain separate throughout the muffler and out of the car. Number of pieces hardly makes one product superior to another, especially when the Borlas are a lot cheaper.

I like both exhausts, but I feel that we need to look at the total picture when we compare them. Most have their good points and bad points, and unfortunately, none are perfect yet. If you are staying NA, then it is really a crapshoot. But if you are going FI, breathing rules, and looking for the best option to get rid of air quickest is best.

if you are deciding between either borla or nismo i personally like the nismo better. If you are asking about any exhaust in general, i would say the exhaust i just put on, although i highly doubt you would like it. I recommend researching and listening to sound clips.

Allow me to explain my original statement. First, it has been said that the large number of pieces make it more difficult to install and get it aligned correctly so the tips line up and look symetrical. Second, the local performance shop that installs Borlas told me that they would recommend tack welding each joint so that the system would not make creaking noises. Third, more pieces mean more joints mean more drag and turbulance. This is a case where more is not better.

Also, you might want to say "less expensive", "cheap" to most people implies lower quality.

Default leaks?

Well, you are correct, the number of pieces do not imply better or worse quality but personally I feel that if you have an exhaust system with 17 parts, that's 16 possible places for an exhaust leak.

Less parts = less chances for a leak.

I understood where you guys were coming from with the pieces before you posted. But the cost advantage of the Borlas far outweigh the pieces to me, IMO. N/A, I wouldn't mind the Nismo at all, FI, I would rather have the Borla, JMO.

Hey thanks alot guys. I'm most likely not going to add FI. I guess i'll just go with the NISMO it provides a good all around hp gain and nice sounds. THanks guys.
