Talking K&N Drop in Air Filter

Went to get my oil changed at EZ Lube the other day and the service guy tried to sell me a K&N Drop In air filter. He claimed that putting in the air filter would give the car a slightly meaner sound. I say Bull Sh*t - Can anybody attest to his comment? Just to clarify - I am referring to the K&N drop in and not the CAI.

Thanks Dude

Get the Jim Wolf technology pop charger, and you will notice a meaner sound! I'm not sure about the drop in, you might notice it a little bit.

Default JWT

Wow. Quick response on these boards. Thinking about the JWT. I am also considering AEM and Typhoon for looks. My only concerns are heat wrapping the Typhoon and the positioning of the AEM.

I figure, if i can get a nice sound just from the K&N air filter - why not? it's hidden and i can change it out easiest.

I am not doubting the popularity of the JWT on this board...but I am curious to learn about K&N air filter experiences too.

If you have one, please let me know if you notice any sound difference.

no change in sound...little better gas milage...for sound and performance popcharger or CAI etc...K&N drop in (which I have) lets you know you will never have to buy another air filter again and probably an insignificant HP gain...only downside is over oiling filter has caused some fouled MAF sensors

I have the K&N Drop in. No change in sound. No noticeable difference in performance either.

Had a drop in and didn't notice much of anything so I got a JWT. The exhaust note is definitly deeper and also has a cool whistle under the hood. Gained mpg was ~1 mpg.

I agree with the previous posters on the sound. The K&N drop in filter will not alter the exhaust note in any noticable way. And while I've noted the change with the other CAIs, I've never seen any definitive evidence that- louder exhaust note aside- any of them actually increase HP and torque over what Nissan designed.

The OEM design has some outstanding design features that haven't really been discussed much. Cool air being pulled from in front of the radiator; a composite intake runner that doesn't heat soak and a nicely postioned, easily accessed large-capacity air filter that works well. It's a simple, elegant design and the K&N replacement works seamlessly with it.

Default Drop-in

I ran a K&N drop in for a few months. Didn't notice anything in either sound or performance. Got a JWT Pop charger and WOW!!! BIG difference in both!

My car likes the drop in K&N, and a very slight change in sound. I am impresed with the Nissan intake design and reliability, as opposed to the CAI systems out there, which can cause problem without any real gains other than side. I'd say stay OEM and drop that K&N in. I can feel my Z breathin easier as it devours my front tires.

Tried to attach a K&N R&D dyno sheet without success. It's their drop-in filter comparsion from a G35 Coupe. It shows a baseline of 233.0 horsepower and 238.9 hp from a 3rd gear pull. The original text said they (K&N) were very surprised.

I first tried to delete this post without success, but was able to edit it.

if any1 wants a K&N filter i'm letting mines go. a couple hundred miles in it. it does feel good knowing my Z breathes a bit better with the drop in filter... but i'm getting a pop charger soon.. just the sound alone sold me. so i have no use for it now.. BTW, does any1 know if the K&N fits the G35c?

no offense, but if you didnt notice any sound difference with the pop charger, then you probably haven't revved the engine over 4000 rpms. the sound is very noticeable above 4000.

well, either that or you always have your stereo blasting

Gary,

I think he meant the K&N drop-in did not make a difference in the sound dept, prior to installing the pop charger.

K&N drop in made my car idle smoother. I went with the K&N because I believe paper filters are too restrictive and wasteful. From what I have read and with G35 owners buying "Z tubes", I was convinced that the Z OEM intake could only be improved by changing the element.

Some points of the OEM Z Intake:
-Direct air inlet
-Composite material will not heat soak
-Large surface area element
-Excellent intake arm design

I don't doubt if you get a plenum, then a CAI or popcharger will show results. The Z intake flaw is the plenum angle.
