oil consumption; what long term affects??
hello folks, this sat im taking my car to the dealer to get an oil change along w/ an oil consumption test. im currently 700miles into my previous oil change and already the dip stick is down 1/4 as indicated - (the crisscross portion) w/ 3/4 left until LOW. the question is, if the dealer denies anything is wrong w/ the motor and denies me a fix for this, what long term affects and/or damages am i looking at down the road say about 5-10 yrs from now? because i want to keep this car and if its just means refilling the motor w/ some oil every 1-2k miles, thats fine, but if it'll possibly cause damage in the future, then i'll try to fight for a fix. thanks!

you are looking at a substantial power loss for one. I know someone with a supercharger who dyno'd 340, and was burning some oil before the install, but no more than a qt/3750 miles. When it got to a qt/600 miles (similar to yours apparently), he only dyno'd 285. Ask the dealership to do a leakdown test. This guy had 85% leakage in 1 cylinder, and 7-10% is considered bad. You won't be the first to have an engine replaced

2003z,
I think you got the cause-and-effect backwards.
dch t,
If you have a safe level of oil in the engine (read dipstick), the engine is satisfied and will not be damaged due to the level of oil. However, if your piston rings and/or cylinder walls are damaged, your performance will suffer and you will use more oil.
You should be concerned about your oil consumption...it's about twice what it should be, unless you have 80k miles of hard driving.
As comparison, I consume about half qt every 4k miles. I have 50k miles on the engine.

thanks for the input guys, this week i plan on doing a self cyl. compression test for each cylinders, i did it before on my old accord but our cars have indie coil packs, so w/ common sense, i have to take off each coil pack from the 6 cyls then crank the car w/ a compression gauge in the cyclinder while the spark plug is removed. correct? does this test show you if oil is seeping into the cyl? or does it just show u the compression amount in the cyl? thanks guys
