also i would think that they would work on some force ratio, cause of a sudden stop. maybe since his car kept barreling through things, never really coming to a sudden halt, that is why they did not deploy. dunno.

i would think the driver has a case for a lawsuit though.
The speed at which the vehicle is moving has nothing to do with it. But, you are correct. It is all dependant on the rate of deceleration (how big the impact is). IIRC, the sensors are a magnet in a tube. If the impact is strong enough to detach the magnet from one side and shoot it to the other, it will deploy the airbags.

Wearing your seat belt along with air bag technology is your best bet to walk away from "bad things" when they happen.

That sounds about right. I was in a wreck years ago in my Toyota Tacoma pickup. I rear ended another guy doing maybe 40+ mph. Completely totalled his car, and messed up my truck pretty bad (although not totalled). It sure seemed like a hard collision, but the air bags didn't deploy. In retrospect, I'm glad they didn't. There really wasn't a need, since I never came close to the steering wheel. And if it had, it would have cost that much more to replace them. (And that ain't cheap!)
