ok I got the car back today, with the official word from nissan being that the oil pressure is within spec. So, I have my car back and documentation of the problem, in the event that this issue causes any further problems.

Default Oil pressure versus speed and temperature (rough)

Like all motor heads I've taken some rough oil pressure readings on my Z and loaded them in my PDA...This is oil pressure just up to 3000 rpm at 60 deg F and again after the engine was warmed up. If you started lower than 60 deg F you would see even higher pressures. And, on a super hot day you would see even lower oil pressures. So this graph shows you a rough idea of how engine speed and oil temp effects oil pressure.

There really isn't much of an issue with "high" oil pressure other than you can over pressurize the oil filter and literally burst it. If that happens, you'll know it. By the looks of the graph 15 to 20 psi at idle on a 90-100 deg F day might be reasonable...get below 10 psi at idle and I would get worried...

(NOTE: Graph is for CASTROIL GTX 10W-30 oil...not a synthetic)

ok, well I really shouldn't be surprised by this dealership, but here is the latest. I received the car back on Friday last week, and didnt really look at the comments on the Ticket until Sunday. The ticket stated that on warm idle my car had oil pressure rating at 70psi (using their machinery to do the measuring).

Now, I am not by any means a mechanic, but if my complaint is-:
1. At cold start my oil pessure is at approx 100 and while accelarting it jumps to 120 also
2. When my car is at warm idle the indicator is just a tick above the 0.

Wouldnt it be a clear indication that if their reading at warm idle read 70, and my gauge reads just above 0, that their may either be a problem with either my gauge or their device. Why would they want to replace the oil pressure sensor?

Anyways, its back in to them again today, and they now clearly understand what the problem is and will hopefully either replace the gauge if its needed or determine the real cause of my fluctuating oil pressure.

[QUOTE=VandyZ] These engines typically get stronger into the 40,000 mile range then plateau and only decrease as the engine wears. QUOTE]

Vandy,

What is the basis of your statement about peaking at 40,000 miles. Has this been your experience or do you have data?

I have been having this problem for about 2 weeks now, and I finally took it in to the dealer. Here is the problem and the steps that I have taken.

1. Notice that on startup that oil pressure reading was very high, it was on the tick mark just before the 120. When i accelerated it jumped all the way to 120.

2. When the car warms up and I sit at idle it is just a little way above the first tick mark. however when i drive it is at the 60 mark

3. After 3 days of checking the oil to make sure it was not low. I did an oil change (jiffy lube)
4. Still no change, after about 7 days ( i didnt have time) I took it in to the dealer.

There verdict is that my engine is not receiving pressure, and I will need a new engine. They said that they contacted NISSAN and NISSAN said that they need to see 5 of my past oil receipt before they replace my engine.

THE PROBLEM.
I dont have 5 receipts, I never keep receipts, I might have the one for the last change I did, but no others. Is there anything I can do to get NISSAN to honor this. I am under warranty. Any help or advice would be great.

I don't know what to do right now.

thanks
this is completely normal...

i just switched out to amsoil from the standard nissan junk today, the newer and better the oil, the more you'll see the pressure swing... i can be tooling along at about 4krpm and press the clutch and the oil pressure will drop from 60psi to the first tick mark, no biggie...

FYI,
Nissan Service Manual provides pressure approximations with engine warm:

idle greater than 14 psi
2000rpm greater than 43 psi
6000rpm greater than 57 psi

The manual adds, "If difference is extreme, check oil passage and oil pump for oil leaks."
