Default oil press. too high?

well i havent driven my car for about a week then i get in it and the oil pressure is about 90+ when i first start it then it starts dropping to 60psi at idle when its fully warmed up. I could have sworn it was about 32psi or somewhere around there at warm idle. now just cruising its about 100psi and at wot its way past 120. am i just being paraniod or is this normal?

Oil is thick when hot. When fully warmed up and at about 3000rpm, oil pressure should be about 4bar in the Z.

WOT when cold (never a good idea), you'll be well over 6bar. Warm idle is low, about 1bar or so.

I have the same issue. I never really paid much attention before to the oil pressure gauge. Now that I have changed to synthetic and the m110 filter I look at it more. I am in the same boat as you. I am a little worried and hope someone can shed some light on this for me.

I am going to drive the car home from work and see what the pressure is like after it gets warm.

I went to the dealership to have it looked at, and they said it was a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor, and the car was fine it was just making the gauge read high, they replaced it under warrenty and all is good now.

I have the same problem. I noticed the oil pressure being about 60psi at idle when the car was warmed up and tapped out the guage to 120 psi at WOT. I took the car to the dealer and they replaced the oil pressure regulator under warranty. They called me today and said my car was done but the oil pressure is still 115psi at WOT and it is now within the normal operating range. Just hope there is no issues when I pick my car up tomorrow. anyone else have issues like this or know the "normal operating range" of oil pressure on a VQ35?

I dug up this old thread because I thought my 115-120 psi at WOT was a little high too. When the car has been running for 15+ mins, it is more like 90-100psi WOT. I have been meaning to check the owners manual to see the normal limits but haven't gotten around to it yet... anyone want to add any comments?

Could this be due to the dealer putting in the wrong viscosity? Like would 10W30 give a higher reading than 5W30?

I am kicking myself for not doing the oil change myself, but I have a card to get free oil changes at the dealer, so I figured "why not"...

Normal range is...

More than 98 kPa at idle
More than 294kPa at 2,000 RPM's
More than 392kPa at 6,000 RPM's

Right from the service manual.

So a problem would more likely occur with low oil pressures than pressures that are too high?

WOT=wide open throttle or pedal to the metal

You'll see slightly higher oil pressure readings right after an oil change.. for like a hundred miles or so.. Dunno why that is but it is normal..

I also read that sometimes using synthetic oil also causes the pressure to be slightly higher..

When I'm at WOT my pressure is around 90-100psi on the stock gauge.. normal cruising is at 60psi and idle is at 30psi.. This is on a warmed up motor.. i don't drive it hard until I see these values..

If you are experiencing constant high oil pressure reading, you might wanna check your PCV hose to make sure it is not clogged or frozen or something sometimes that causes hgher than normal oil pressure..

Yeah I got an oil change recently, which is why I actually noticed that it seemed high. Before the oil change it was reading pretty low... probably no more than 60-75 psi at WOT and like 12-15psi at idle.

I didn't ask what the dealer put in it. I assumed they would use the standard OEM spec dino oil and OEM filter. Like I said, my oil changes are free, so I didn't bother to do it myself.

try changing the oil yourself with something like royal purple. If the oil pressure returns to normal, you know it was the oil. If it stays the same you know that there is a problem.

The reason my pressure went all the way up was because the dealership hit my oil pressure sensor and damaged it, so it caused my gauge to read inaccurately. Maybe the same happened to you.

I finally noticed the dealer put in 10W-30, which I think might be the reason for the higher pressure readings.

I plan to try royal purple 5W-30 at around 7500 miles and I'll post up what happens. I'm at like 6800 right now IIRC.

I beleive my sensor is screwed or at least I hope it is...I was riding home from school (80mi. drive) about 65-70 mph and looked at my oil pressure gauge and it was pegged as high as it could go...so I pulled over and at idle it was around 124 and with the car off but acc. on it was like 90 something. Since I am turbo'd and have aftermarket oil pan..etc. I am a little scared about going to a dealership. Oh and I now have a SES light that on all the time. What should I do? How much are those sensors?

I started a thread a week or so ago about something similar. I was driving home from work one day, and glanced over and noticed my oil pressure gauge was pegged all the way to the right, now matter what.

When I disconnected the harness from the sensor, it went back to "0", so that ruled out a wiring/grounding out problem. Tomorrow, I'm going to get a new sensor and swap it out. That should fix it, we'll see. I'll let you know.
