Default 3rd Gear

When I dip out, sometimes it's hard to catch third gear. Does anyone else have that problem with the 03'?

Does it happen all the time? Mine seems to recently do it when it feels like.. and I'm kinda iffy if I take it to the dealer and they cant get it to grind.

Ha...glad you asked. Let me give you my run down. Last year about this time, my Z started to grind going into 3rd but only when downshifting and above 60MPH and not all the time but most of the time. I took it to the dealer and they said they couldnt reproduce the problem and furthermore that i should not be downshifting into 3rd at 60 MPH. I was like "WTF-its a freakin sportscar and it will do 90 in 3rd so downshifting at 60 into 3rd shouldnt matter!" No dice.

I took it back in this past week because in the past year it has now deteriorated to the point that it will grind downshifting from 5th to 3rd at 40MPH. It will also grind now from a 2-3 upshift if done quickly. Needless to say, the dealer this time was able to reproduce the problem and they called and told me a new tranny and clutch are ordered.

Thanks! I guess I'll just wait it out until it gets worst, I have about 30k on the car. This sucks because I have the JWT clutch and flywheel sitting in my garage waiting to be installed. I don't want to install it yet, because if the dealer sees I used that clutch they might blame it and give me the whole BS story.

I have a JWT popcharger and they didnt say anything about that, but then again thats not really related to the tranny!! Also, make sure that if it gets to the point that "you" can make it grind and reproduce it, take it to the dealer and have a technician ride with you and do it for them. If i had done that the first time, i wouldnt have had to wait a year for it to get worse. They couldnt make it grind, but i knew what to do to make it grind and i should have done it for them. Good luck!!

How much is a stock clutch and what is the best aftermarket street clutch for the 350. Thanks for the tip with the grinding, I'll make sure those bastards pay.

What exactly is the definition of grinding gears? I know that my gear changing is extremely loud underneath the car, kind of like a thumping clank. Anyone else experience the thumping clank of shifting in the Z.

Besides the hundreds of posts here

"Sticky: Post here only if you have had your TRANNY replaced."

...this is the first time that I’ve heard about the problem.
