Like many of you, my window motor failed. The stealership wanted $500 to replace the motor, since I was out of warranty, so instead I followed the excellent advice in this thread:

and cleaned the old motor. It worked fine for about a month then failed again. I picked up a new replacement motor from Autozone for about $160 (of which $35 or so will be returned when I bring in the old motor) and installed it.

A couple of tips that should make the job go smoother. If you can get your window in the "up" position prior to starting the job it will be a bit easier.

Follow all the procedures in the above mentioned thread except the job will be easier if you simply unhook the door latch cables and unplug all the electrical connectors.

Before removing the old motor from the inner panel/window track, duct tape your window to the door so that it won't drop down. Then simply unbolt the old motor and install the new one in it's place. When you re-attach the inner door panel to the window tracks it helps to have someone hold the window to align the bolt holes.

You may have to perform the reset procedure described in the above thread however I did not and my window works perfectly.

I had a friend help me and the job took less than 45 minutes.

If anyone has any other tips or photos to add, please do so.

 

Had my drivers side window motor replaced today. The dealership wanted 420.00, but I have an extended warranty so I only had to pay the 100.00 deductible. I had done the cleaning about a month ago and it worked for about a week. I think the brushes in the motor were too worn down to work much longer. Bad motor design, should have been brushless. Oh well, it's fixed now and it works fine.

 

How long did the cleaning last for your motor?

Correct: AutoZone, $160/motor; $20-30/labor. Lifetime warranty. NO stealership rip-off!

 

Thanks for the info, I had my passenger side die in the middle of winter with no garage, so I had them do it. My butthole is still sore

 

How much was labor? It was so easy to do..

I still cant get my **** to come down the quarter inch though..

 

I figured out my window AUTO roll down problem. First you should try cleaning it with electric motor cleaner as in the DIY thread.

I did that and it did nothing.. I bought a new motor, still nothing..

Then I had an epiphany and looked at the window switch Male prongs for the connector... I discovered 1 was bent and not going into the female side I then took some needle nose plyers to straighten the prong and cleaned the window switch prongs with Electric motor cleaner, just a slight spray and plugged it..... BAM!! Its perfect!! It lowers again when u open the door, and doesnt automatically fall when u close the door....

Im going to post this in all the window threads to people can check there connectors too.. It could be happening a lot... No need to pay a dealer 500 for bs....

Side note: I noticed where it did bend the prong that female hole on the connector is smaller than all the others which could deflect the prong easily if not careful.... Leading to our cars being ****ed up by dealers techs etc. Then we discover the problem later.

Ya, I cleaned my window motors before. Now I just have 2 lifetime warranty motors since I'm not planning on selling the car, and they will continue to fail...

 

I am going to do this for my z. But I hope the AutoZone one lasts kinda ling because it's tedious to take it out again

 

~2 years, but they don't roll up at the exact same speed. Kind of ghetto

 

If everyone who had the window motor fail on them filed a safety complaint with the NHTSA, then Nissan would be forced to do a recall and possibly reimburse anyone who made the repair.

Do yourself and everyone else who owns a Z a favor. When a part fails due to bad design, complain (loudly) to the NHTSA. Even though it might seem like you're banging your head against a wall, every now and then, you actually get results.

 

Sure this is old. Filed a complaint anyway. Going to nissan to have fixed tomorrow.
