Default My A/c Doesnt Work!!

What could be going wrong, I have an 03 with about 50 thousand miles on it, and one day a few weeks ago the A/C stopped working. I put it on full blast all the way low temp, and the air coming through is cabin temp...?? Can I fix this any way, and if I take it to the dealer will they do anything about it since the warranty is up already at 50k miles???

thanks

At 50,000 ur about due for a A/C Chk. Chances are that ur low or out off freon , which means u have a leak. Leak could be at a fitting or the front seal of ur compressor or even Condenser/Evaporator. First thing to do is plug in Gages and chk Pressure, If ur press. is low ur press. switch wont allow the comp. to engage. Jump the switch to engage it. Pressure ideally will be 250 on the Hi Side and 35 or so on the Low Side. Beyond that --U need to take it in---Not to the dealer ---I really dont think warrenty will cover it, but make sure. A/C is not rocket science but takes experience and unique equipment. All u can do is take it someone u trust cuz A/C guys will ream you. The Dealer will ream u more. My rule of thumb is ---a 50,000 mile A/C redo will run 750-1000.00 if u dont need major component replacement. Minimum is all O-Rings replaced,Drier replaced,Expansion Valve replaced,System flush,Vacuum System, Add Oil, Charge back up. Evaporator replace Labor can be killer.

I crossed a little over the 50k mark and my A/C just went out today.

If I'm not mistaken, the compressor works on the same belt as everything else. If the belt snapped, he'd have more problems that just an A/C compressor.

Unless Down under and Dirty means Australia----There may be a difference due to difference in design

There are actually two belts that run off the crank. One runs the PS pump and ancillary systems, while the one to the right runs the A/C.

Looking straight down from the front of the engine, you can see both belts and check if the a/c one has broken. If that's not it, then you probably will need some a/c repairs that others have covered. Just a suggestion, but since your warranty is up, I'd go shop that repair to local and franchise repair dealerships. It's not that difficult a job and you could end up saving some significant money.

Thank you for the clarification. I've yet to work in the engine compartment yet. Was taking a wild guess.

just take it in to get the A/C recharged with dye. The tech can tell if there's a leak in the system. Always run the A/C every now and then year round to keep the o rings lubricated.
