noise when accelerating on a 06
hey guys i have a 06 350z with 7,xxx miles on it. Recently my car started to make i guess a rattling noise when im accelerating between 2,500-3,000 rpm and right when i shift. its most audible in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and somewhat audible in 4th. Its really noticeable when i drive for the first 10 minutes, and then isnt as loud after. It seems like its coming from the front, maybe tranny? im not sure, if you guys have any ideas i would really appreciate it. thanks

I would check your oil. The 06's have a problem with burning oil, and mine was doing something very similar to that when I found it was dangerously low on oil. Has your oil light been popping up on sharp turns any?

im sure its not the rear axle clicking. its coming from the front. as for gas i always put in premium 91 octane at chevron and dont think is a gas ping. can you tell me how a gas ping may sound? i think it may be the oil i havent seen the oil light come on yet. but im going to change out my oil and see if thats the cause, im about due for one. thanks for all the input guys

Is it a tinny, metalic sounding rattle? I had that sound on my Altima and it was a loose heat shield. I actually have the same sound now after I got my headers installed. I'm thinking they didn't tighten something up properly. Possilby a heat shield again. Maybe something loosened up in your car. Have a mechanic go for a ride with you so they can hear it.
BTW severe ping sounds like you have pop rocks in your engine, other people say it sounds like rocks being shaken in a jar. I had that problem after I got some bad gas and dyno'd it, when I hit about 6K the engine sounded terrible. But you shouldn't get it too much at lower rpms, detonation (pinging) from bad gas or low octane fuel is usually a higher rpm issue. At least as I've been told.

You're probably talking about the 2500-3000 rpm rattle from the aluminum shift bushing. It's normal. Almost any car with aluminum shift bushing will rattle at a specific rpm range.
You accelerate in 1, 2, or 3, and go past 3000 rpm, then just let off (do not push in clutch). You'll hear it for sure. It's normal.

I have it on my 06 - its confirmed engine pinging - there is apparently an acceptable "amount" of pinging. im taking it back for them to fix it properly. That and im burning more oil than saddam in the first iraq war.

Add my name to the list.
The sound definitely is coming from the engine bay and it does sound like valve rattle or pinging. Mine occurs usually when the engine is warm and I'm under load (up a hill or heavy acceleration). I've had the dealer investigate and so far they say they cannot duplicate the noise.
On the other issue... I've just started my second round of oil consumption tests. First round showed about 1 qt in 4000 miles - they say it needs to be more than 1 qt for 3000 mi before it is considered excessive.

I have a 06 and I have been to the dealer several times about the pinging which started shortly after I bought it 4 months ago( see my original post by whitehotz). Dealer has replaced the anti knock sensor, and the ecm unit and it is still pinging, usually on acceleration at about 2500 to 3000 rpm. I have on engine mods, and always run 92 octane gas, and from different sources. Getting very frustrated with my performance car that sounds like an old Vega.
