Default Trunk Clunk Noise

For the past 2 weeks my Z has made a clunk noise when going over little bumps or potholes. Almost like the shock is not secure in the rear or something to that effect. It's nothing hanging below the car (exhaust) or anything else. Anyone else have the trunk clunk? I'll be taking the car to Nissan this Friday. I'd like to be able to give them some sort of suggestion, since we all know how helpful they can be

Thanks alot!

If it is anything it may be just the moulding in the cabin or could be the strut tower assembly in the back moving slightly. Could be the axle clicking noise like some people get with their older z's. Mine has rattles now and then, but it is made of plastic and metal. I just tune it out because it isn't really noticeable on mine.

Sounds like a clunk, not a rattle or movement of plastic.

Hmmmmmm, is it a clunk that only happens when you go over a bump or more of a constant clunk/rattling around kind of sound. If it sounds like it constantly makes that noise then you might have a blown shock. If you recently installed a custom suspension, jack the rear of the car off the ground with a floor jack positioned under the rear diff(chock the front wheels of course) and then check random things in the rear to see if there loose or not.

You may have already checked this out... but inspect how your jack etc. is secured in the trunk space. Mine wasn't properly secured and was making a dull thumping sound.

I have stripped the trunk to the bare metal. Sound is still there.

Have you noticed any change in the handling of your zed Shane?? How many kms or miles are you up to?

I've amongst other things just had the stock shocks replaced under warranty. One was almost gone and the other had seized, only had 30k on clock when trouble started, and yes did make some odd noises over bumpy road. Also as they other guys say, check the shock towers.

Keep us posted with progress.

I have a creak in the rear of my Z. It started shortly after I purchased it used with 45k. Since then I have replaced, shocks, springs, sways and it is still there. I did notice however when removing the old shocks that the gasket above the top hats was worn and paper thin. It was late that night and I had no access to replacement parts so I installed the new ones without them. I will purchase these gaskets and see if it fixes the problem. On a side note since I modified the suspension and added more weight to the front with the s/c install I started to get a clunk around every turn or bump. I have tracked this down to the end links, they wear over time and become loose if not bust all together causing this noise. I would check the rears and see if they are loose, worn or busted. Also make sure everything is nice and tight under there. When changing out the suspension I noticed that some of the bolts where not tight and over time could have worked their way loose. GL

I started noticing a similar thud or clunk when going around corners. I eventually realized that it was coming from the tool kit I keep in the cubby behind the passenger seat. Now that I've packed some more stuff in there to keep it from moving the sound has stopped.

What about your spare tire or something else in the wheel well? Jack, lug wrench, etc.?

dang! my exhaust was tapping the cross member! haha! it wasn't even close when I looked under the car, but Stillen spotted the problem immediately and put some extra shims in there to give me an extra inch of travel. no more clunk!

LOL thats so funny, I had the same problem with my Helix exhaust. Completely forgot to bring that up as a suggestion. Glad it was a simple fix. I simply loosened the bolts and lifted the part which was hitting the cross member with a jack then bolted everything back up tight. Knock went away

I had my entire interior out in the trunk looking for it, even adjusted the hatch lock. Even found that the exhaust heat shiled was rattling on the passengers side; fixed that.

Did I find the clucnk? Yep!

The clunk is the hatch shocks, where the chrome piston attached to the hatch, the metal cups are wobbled out from lifinh and shutting the hatch. There is actually about 1/8" of play in them, and you can re-create the noise by pushing up on the hatch when it is fullly opened. I kind of fixed it with some grease and shims, but it's still there, just less.

Also the Hatch springs that pop the hatch up when you unlock it vibrate as well, but that was not it. I had everything out of the back, and narrowed it down the the hatch shocks.
