I knew i had 2-3 coming from the right area of the dash board or rear visor (passenger side).
1. Put felt circles around the corners of the visor, between the mirror and plastic mirror cover. Be sure to build them up with multiple layers so it has enuf padding
2. Took the little round plastic cover (opposite of alarm light cover on drivers side) on passanger side out and put 2 layers of electrical tape about it (the area that contacts the dash) and around the wires that lead to it. it used to move around a bit, now it is SNUG.
3. put felt padding between the black plastic that covers up the wire to the rearview mirror between the rearview mirror and headliner.
4. tightened jack so it fits snug in the foam piece.
my rear rattle was still there so I just started moving things around in the back. Noticed the bolt that holds the spare tire was very loose.
5. Tightened the hand bolt on the spare tire (it sounded like it was the aluminum over the strut tower, since this piece does feel a bit loose, and the sound was metallic in origin, ended up being bolt against the body)
rear rattle-GONE
btw, the rear rattle returned 2 weeks later, I went and inspected it again, sure enuf it was loose again, I tightened it and it is good now.
here is a list of common rattles and some fixes people have done on this site. I did an extensive search before I fixed mine, I did NOT write this list it is from many members on this board, so don't give me credit and I am NOT trying to take any. I hope it is OK if I write this without permission of the original authors, if so, moderators feels free to delete this.
here it is.
1. I also had one where the rear view mirror plastic cover mounted into the ceiling. Got some felt pad circles and stuffed them behind the slip cover near the ceiling. All gone
2. One cold morning I had a rattle from the area you describe. I had my spouse (she just happened to be in the car) push down on the small plastic piece at the base of the right A-pillar. The rattle disappeared.
3. There are two connectors (one on each side) at the front of the dash, ROUND circles. One is the security light (alarm) and the other is a blank. I had a rattle there so I carefully lifted them out with a small screw driver. There are wires underneath that I wrapped with electrical tape around some felt. It seemed to work for me.
4. I've got a really loud one around my VDC switch
5. I don't know if anyone has heard a rattle in the rear hatch while driving slowly over concrete expansion joints. I took my car in today and the tech took my car out with the service manager and isolated the rattle. The rattle came from the vibration of rear window brake light . He was able to fix it by disassembling the light and placing some insulation between the metal window frame and the metal holder. If any of you should notice a metal rattle in the rear hold your hand on the light to see if it stops. Once isolated the fix only took about 15 minutes to repair.
6. Visor lid rattle-Someone posted that they were able to take apart the visor and put heat shrink tubing around the springs which stopped the sound, or put a piece of folded paper between lid and mirror. BUT here's the NEWS: Nissan will recall the passenger visor and will have a replacement soon....according to my Service Manager who works directly with Nissan Engineer down in San Francisco
7. Headliner against the windshield
8. Seatbelt (pass side)
9. Rear jack loose
10. Under aluminum part/Z of strut tower
11. Doors Passenger>driver
btw2, for those that think this car is a POS because of the few rattles, I tell you this, my mothers MB ML430 has waay more rattles and problems and it is a $50k car/SUV, my dad is on his 4th CLK (2-430s, 2-55s) and I can tell you that those cars had rattles too, the 1st CLK55 was VERY stiff and had a few, the 2nd one seems to have softer suspension and has less, although, it does have one. He picks up a SL500 next week, will be interesting to see how that one feels.

RodH,
Thanks for summing up these posts.
Is there a way to make this a sticky at the top of the "maintenance" section? I have a few rattles in the dash, and I'd like to check out some of the solutions.
I have two rattles to add - not fixes yet, but hopefully soon:
1. Rear View Mirror - I have a buzzing sound that goes away if I squeeze the mirror. I'm thinking of just putting in some wicking CA glue to see if that locks things up. Nervous about outgassing on the plastic though.
2. Rattle in driver door when window is down - I can actually fix this by applying pressure to the rear end of the armrest. I think there is a slight misalignment in the window roller or maybe a loose wire hitting something. I need to get the grease streaks fixed, so maybe the TSB will solve the rattle problem, too.
I love the car, and while the rattles are annoying, they certainly aren't a serious problem.

Damn Rodh, you're good at this rattle diagnostic stuff.. Can I drive my car over and have you take a look at it?? I have two rattles, one in the dash on the drivers side and one on the passenger side of the dash.

i have a rattle coming from the oil guage. it is coming directly from the silver rim that is on the exterior of guage, and sounds like it's rubbing against some styrafoam. i dunno exactly what is the cause because it comes and goes at different times. maybe i have to look into it more, but is there a quick solution to this?
4. I've got a really loud one around my VDC switch
Has anyone heard a sound like a squeeky bed spring coming from under the car only when accelerating (or lunging forward from a slow roll). Dealer couldn't isolate the sound on the hoist. Kind of sounds like it coud be suspension but I only here it when I torque the engine, no sound when I go over bumps. Could it be mounts?
Could it be twisting metal on metal? eeeeeeeeek!

I know where this one is coming from. Just don't know how to fix it. The center console and three meters are rubbing against each other. They almost a metal ringing noise. Any suggestions pls.
I've also got the metal sounding rear rattle that many of you have described. I checked the third brake light. I put some felt between the light case and the window...still have the rattle. I tightened the tire jack against its housing and wrapped all the accessories in paper towel...still have the rattle. I tightened the spare tire as much as I could...still have the rattle. I've noticed I can take the car to work and not experience any rear rattle. Then, the next day it's rattle mania. I've also noticed I usually hear the rattle when making a turn onto a grade, say a driveway. You guys seem to be the rattle experts! Do you have any suggestions? Can this spare tire stuff be tightened too much so that when it is moved by a bump the heavy friction causes a noise?
I appreciate any suggestions!

I've got a rattle coming from the passanger side dash. I took out the little circle thing suggested by rodh in this post and wrapped some electrical tape around it and made is snug but that didn't make a difference.
I called a nissan service center and they suggested some silicon spray (because I told him the noise sounded like it's coming from where the window and the dash meet.)
Do you think the silicon spray may be a good idea?
Thanks,
For any suggestions.
At this point I'm thankful I've only got one rattle!
This car still rocks!!!! rattle and all

I have experienced a vibration that sounds like it is above the driver's seat in the ceiling. It seems to go away during the day if the car is sitting out in the sun??? This is weird. I couldn't get the car to vibrate when I took it to the dealer last weekend. I was able to determine that a rattle I had been experiencing is related to the dashboard cupholder. Don't know if ordering a new one solve the problem though!

OK: About the rear end creaking sound. Someone posted that they had their dealer do a check with the 'Electronic Ears' and found a few craeks squeeks and rattles in the rear end area. One of which was the Rear Axle Flang. I've had this creaking sound since I got my car. I finaly got my dealer to look at the rear right axle and sure enough thats where it was coming from.
If anyone is getting this sound when accelerating/deccelerating, (a little like the sound of a bed spring) get your rear axle flang bolt retorqued.
