Before this, I striped down the passenger side inside of trunk to see if any thing was loose, but did not find anything either. However, after removing the inside panels on the passenger side, I did notice that the ticking metallic noise got a bit louder. Therefore, I am guessing the noise has to be coming from the bottom or the side of the trunk and not the hatch area.

Since I did not find anything inside, the noise could be coming from the outside passenger side of the car. Around inside of the C-pillar or close the the fuel cap area inside the car.

Still search for a solution to his ticking metallic noise. Please post your findings.

I had a sheet metal type rattling sound that I wasn't sure if it was inside or out coming from the passanger rear too and it was coming from outside of the car.

There is a flimsy sheet metal sheild/guard of some sort by the exhaust near the rear bumper and one of the nuts backed all the way out and dissapered and that was one of the rattles I fixed.

Any pics? Is this nut accessible without raising up the car? I don't want to take it to a body shop and prefer to fix it myself.

Thanks.

^ I took this sheet metal guard out and it made no difference. The rattle is still there. It's right behind the mufflers.

I had the same problem so I went back there and took a tire iron to the guy. Just take the body out or make sure he is out cold and the sounds will go away!

All you have to do is look under the car to see the nut. There is nothing to remove to see or get to the nut, if that's what it is in your case.

No need to raise the car either.

I investigated my hatch rattle by letting a friend drive while I tried to locate the noise. Through trial and error I found the rattle diminished when pushing up hard on the hatch. I then removed the trim that covered the locking mechanism and applied some grease on the lock. I then adjusted the lock downwards via the screws on either side. Result - no more hatch rattle!

Nice. Another option would be to rent a midget to lay back there and apply pressure to the hatch plastic. Make sure to get one with strong arms who doesn't fatigue too quickly.

Update: Changed my exhaust to Injen with Angled tip, much more quieter and less bass from my previous exhaust. The results: No more hatch rattle, now I got exhaust rattle for misaligning the exhaust which is now hitting my sway bar or M-brace. lol

I think Im gonna try to do that. Take the panel off where the locking mechanism is and mess with it a bit.

I tightened all the bolts around the bottom latch behind the trunk panel today. Rattle is still there, so I believe the rattle is coming from the outisde of the car from the underside.

Just to let everyone know, the dealer did not fix the problem for the 4th time. I am pursuing the Lemon Law process and see what happens. I suggest if you guys are having the same problem, contact Nissan Motors, Inc. and start a file on your service orders. Enough complaints and they might even start a re-call. I would've of left alone, I mean, I dont hear the noise if my music is loud, but why should I have to do that? I'm busting my *** at work for a $30,000 car!

Yes I am, it's not like im driving a 10 year old car here with 200,000 miles on it. I bought it brand new in october of last year. Dont get me wrong, I love the Z, and I do tear it up on the road every now and then, but it's not like im drifting or abusing the car in any way. If the dealership would of fixed the probem I wouldnt even of had to do all this. Like I said, Im paying on a $30K car, not a Kia.

Well I got rid of about 85-90% of the noise from my hatch. I didn't have any grease so I just sprayed the catch and hatch hook thingy with WD40 and installed a thin cardboard type spacer (I used the thin cover stuff off of a spiral note pad) and put in in between the hatch where the catch bolts to the hatch.

edit:
I drove about 175 miles today on all types of freeways and twisty back roads and honestly I don't recall hearing it once. Lets hope it stays quiet:-D

Gonna try adding one more shime and if that doesn't work I'm gonna push the Z off of HWY 1 into the drink and buy a Porsche

I love quoting myself.

I added a second thin shim and the noise has once again gone away. I noticed that when I removed the catch to install the 2nd shim, that one of the 2 screws was not as tight as the other one, Even though I torqed the **** out of both screws, it still loosend a tiny bit, probably because the shim got compacted. So I added the second shim, so if or I should say when it starts doing it again, I'm just going to try to re-torque the screws and see if that's what caused it. If that's what it is I'll then try adding loctite to the threads.

And if those don't work then I'll push it off a cliff.

Man, it's good to know that I'm not the only one with this freakin' rattle. Guess I will check out my latch as well. It DOES sound like it's coming from the passenger side though, weird.

^ It sounds like it's coming from all directions. lol

I had a friend sit in the car then the hatch. Definitely coming from the rear. But he said he heard more of the rattle inside the speaker box rather than the latch...
