Default OEM Nav compartment door

So my friend was driving me in his Z today, and I noticed what when he presses the button on the NAV compartment door, it opens up, and slides in. I realized when I got home that mine doesn't do that, nor can I push it in using any amount of force. I have an 04.5 track, and his is an 03 track, but it just doesn't make sense that they would change that from year to year.

The previous owner had a video screen in the stock nav area I believe....so is it possible he broke it/ just didnt put it back together properly when returning everything to stock? Can someone advise me on how I might go about opening the center console up and fixing this, as I have my aux cable there, and it's a pain in the *** to fiddle with my ipod with one hand while the NAV door is sticking out... thanks!

03 compartment doors are indeed different than 04. No its not broken, its supposed to be that way. The compartment itself can be swapped if you can find an 03 for sale. Dealers also sell them but they can get pricey.

Oh! Thanks for the info. I never would have guessed that, since it seems like a counterproductive change to make. I suppose it makes sense though...after looking at it and feeling around the mechanism, it really didn't seem like it had ever been built to have the door retract in the first place...now I know why
