I Drilled HOLES in my GAS TANK!!
My stereo installer and I were talking about something like this not too long ago. He was building a custom enclosure to fit in the stock Bose compartment and we were trying to decide how to secure it. I told him NOT to screw it the floor. So he designed the box to fire the subwoofer downwards and screwed the box to the stock Bose speaker support panel.
I wouldn't be too surprised if more people haven't done what ryan21 has.
+1 on taking it to the dealer. I hate taking my car in to the dealership, but for something like this, it's better safe than sorry.
Keep us up to date on what you finally decide on. Good luck.

PS: op, are you alive?
I think you just solved my delima (sadly) that is where I have had my amps mounted there because hey it will be out of the way and hidden and its just a nice empty space.... I happened to notice a gas smell a while back but only after I filled up I chalked it up to a faulty vent or something like that, but i recently did a track day and the smell got worse so I think i regretably have the same problem. Note to self remember cars anatomy and take the time to do things yourself and not let people screw into your car at random places
