Default Burning oil?

On my last oil change I switched over to Mobil 1 at 4622 miles. First time I have every used synthetic oil. I placed 5 quarts in when I changed my oil with a filter replacement.

I checked the dip stick this week (6000 miles) and found that the oil was a little bit darker. I also noticed that I was about 3/4 of a quart down. Do you think my motor is buring oil?

KJ

Motors burn synthetic FAR more rapidly than they do typical oils.

Don't be surprised to see that you're "burning off" oil.

Default as for darkness of the oil..

i don't think it's due to the fact that your car is necessarily burning oil. mobil 1 with "super syn" is darker than regular motor oils. it should be a dark copperish color straight out of the bottle when you first pour it into your car. should you be worried about the color? probably not. but do make sure that your oil level doesn't drop significantly.

Default I have the same assessment

The last time I changed my oil, I poured the entire 5 qt container of Mobil 1 5w30 that Wal-Mart sell for $19 and change. I checked my level last week @ 6k miles and the dipstick was down about 1/8 inch from the max. level.

you're half way to your next oil change. that is really nothing to worry about. but monitor it further to see if the "burn off" accelerates.

Default same amount loss

I just turned 6500mi, and checked mine (as I've been using Mobil 1 since 2000mi). I see the same oil amount drop that you all have quoted. I was wondering if it was a problem as well, but I'm guessing since we are all seeing it, it should be alright

Just my 2 cents

3500 miles since I put in 5 quarts of Amsoil 5w-30, still within an 1/8" of full mark. Synthetic oil does not burned quicker than dino oil. There is quite a variation in oil consumption rates, yours is not excessive but maybe higher than average. Keep an eye on it and make sure you don't have a leak.

Angry smokes at startup

My 2003 Enthusiast 350Z puffs grey smoke at startup. Same thing an engine with high miles will do, but mine has only 6200 on it, has not been abused and has been maintained correctly. This worries me and I wondered if others have this same experience. Doesn't appear to be using oil.
