Hi,
I own a 2006 350z and it is a 5AT. I have had the car for about a year now and it has been nothing short of amazing. I love every aspect of it.
But over the past month or so, I have realized then while driving, and when the car shifts into 3rd gear, It feels like it slams or drops into it instead of being smooth like all the other gears are. This is more prominent when driving the car hard.
I am not sure what the problem may be so I was hoping someone here could lead me into the right direction of whats happening with my car.
Thanks in advance.
-Tim

Is this happening while in the manual mode? If so mine (2008) does it as well. Aggro Al in some thread mentioned it had something to do with the torque converter(I think) Maybe he will visit this thread.

Kid is right about Al's post. He explained how I beleive 1st and 2nd arent locked and maybe 3rd is locked, so you get a kind of slam effect when going into 3rd. Have you had the auto fluid changed ever? Might need a change if its old, its lubricating properties diminish as it ages and gets heated while driving. I Beleive 30k or 2 years is in the manual. I looked earlier to see when I needed to do it, was gonna change my diff fluid for 2nd time but decided to wait till 30k.

In most cases, it is normal especially if you are driving it hard. If you have reached or passed your scheduled maintenance you should get it maintained or serviced. If it feels like it never really connects or you get a burning smell you should get it serviced right away.
Third gear is a partial lock-up gear. it will use hydraulic transfer up to a certain point then the clutch will lock-up and become mechanical. If you drive it hard it will lock-up almost immediately. The TC will torque multiply right away then all of a sudden stop when the clutch locks up giving you a sort of kick or slam feeling.

I've noticed this in my '03 5AT. Does anyone know if it could cause any damage? I don't really understand why it only does it in manual mode, other than to discourage you from using manual mode.....
