~19,500 miles. No grinding. Sitting at idle, push in clutch, engage 1st and there's a muted CLUNK as it goes into gear. If I hold the clutch in, slide to neutral and back to first, no noise. It's only on the first engagement of 1st.

Anyone else seen (heard) this?

 

Yep same here. No cruntch, no grind, just a clunk as you describe every once in a while when going into first. You can feel it too right?

 

Yes. I assume you are up there with me in miles? First and only tranny. No grinding. Ever. Kind of bothers me. I'm sure it's been going on for quite a while, but I really noticed it this A.M. when pulling into the garage after 45 minutes on the road. The reason I picked up on it was because I was easing into my space and had to pull a little bit forward after coming to a stop. I can repeat the noise every single time.

Only have 9300 miles and this has been going on since around 6000. Took it to the dealer and they could not hear it.

 

I'm getting all sorts of weird noises from my tranny. I don't have nearly as many miles as you (not even 800 mi yet), and I get:

* A clunk when it goes into first when moving slowly

* tranny/clutch rattles back and forth if I drive in first, let off the gas and then push the clutch in (no matter the speed of the pedal; I thought it might be I was pushing the clutch too slow)

* the infamous 2nd gear "lump" ... like the synchro won't let it go into 2nd gear

* a weird click or clunk when going from 2nd to 3rd


Getting a little frustrated... I need to call the dealer and see what the deal is.

 

My G35 does that as well. It sounds like it is coming from the rear end or something. I am not sure where it is coming from, but it is there. Like you all said, it is rather annoying.

 

I dont think the clutch is engaging all the way. Like there is still spinning going on until you put it in gear, then it catches itself and stops with a clunk. I dont know, it does not really bother me.

What does bother me is if I am sitting at a light or in traffic and take out of gear then try to get it back in gear . . .sometimes it wont go without me re-clutch or "bang" it into 1st gear.

 

OK, let me ask you another question. Do you have a "heavy" or "light" clutch pedal? Feel like Honda or a truck?

 

Like mine... Adam's clutch is VERY light. Lighter than most Hondas I've driven.

 

OK, well that theory's no good. I thought it might be heavy clutches that do this because mine is like a TRUCK. Everyone who drives my car comments on it.

the noise is almost certainly the diff. i'm not sure how energy is transfered back there (with the clutch in), but my miata does the same thing. whats weird is that with the clutch depressed, no torque should make its way into the diff/driveshaft. i can only assume that as the synchros get the gears to line up, there is some movement of the output shaft. also explains why it only happens once at a given stop. once the output side of the tranny is in a position where the gears/synchros line up, repeated in/out of first gear shouldn't affect it.

I have a whining noise when I start the car in the mornings, but it goes away after I engage the clutch. no clunk going into first tho.
I have only 750 miles on my car. transmission runs fine through all gears. the only thing is that whining sound I get from it.

 

Same here. In general I am not very happy with the transmission. I love the throws ect but it is about as smooth as screech at the prom. I am considering having the dealer replace it!

BTW I have a heavy clutch with a short takeup. My friends Z has a light clutch with a longer takeup. i'll take the fomer over the latter.

 

check owners manual page 5-23 last paragraph on left side of page and this may shed some light on the clunking noise.

 

which states??? i dont feel like going to the car to look.

 

I heard a rumor awhile back that the 3rd gear in the manual trans is made of brass. Has anyone else heard of this?

it says its a self diagnostic to test the vdc system which according to them is normal.

 

the self diagnostic will only occur the first time you pull away from a stop through some arbitrary speed (some models of car it is 3mph, some up to 8 or 10mph). this is the self check for abs/vdc. the noise originally referenced here i believe is one that you can hear when you put it into gear after coming to a stop. that is, every time you come to a stop, when you put it into first, i at least, hear a small clunk that seems to be any play in the diff being taken out. as i said, my miata does the same thing, only a little louder.
