Tranny Replaced 4/26/04 @ 29K Miles

No more chatter (clutch in/out). All gears are smooth... for now.

Tranny just replaced yesterday, 4/28/04 @ 2600 miles.

New tranny shifts better into 2nd, but now 1st and 5th are much worse. Loud gear whine at all speeds is still there too. I'm gonna give it 200 miles to break in and pray for improvements...POS.

So what constitutes abuse?

Poor technique like riding the clutch?

Or driving hard like high rpm shifts, launches, aggressive downshifting? Basically I drive my Z the same way it's driven in the "Run" hehe

Let me define - abuse by car magizine geek, is when you get to go out into the parking lot get into a 350Z that does not belong to you and drive the **** out of it, knowing that you are doing this for the good of your readers. You know, what we all would like to do I imagine that these Z's are driven harder then I drive mine since if I screw mine up I have to pay for it, plus I am in it with this Z for the long run not 12 months. Thumbs down Replaced 6mt in G35 Sedan

1st tranny shifted very hard into 2nd gear when cold, and when warm would grind. The new tranny is not much better. I can feel catch going into 2nd and 3rd gear. It is only a matter of time befor this one goes south. 1st tranny replaced on or about 2/15/04 w/6500 mi. on a 03 G35 sedan

When mine was replaced in December of '03 I was told the trans was to be sent to NNA. I was also told someone wanted to look at it.

on the new tranny when accelerating in 1st (not under hard acceleration) it makes an odd whine. Also shifting into 1st and 5th can be a little hard.

Bimmers are nice cars. Unfortunately, they attract people like asdlasdl...similar to how bug zappers work.

My 08 tranny installed 6000 miles ago seems to be holding up well. Fast shifting is still hard, and so is downshifting from 6th to 4th (to pass cars on two-lane roads). I have to shift in sequence because it's a lot smoother even if I gears just tomakes me kind of wish Nissan offered a SMG type transmission...then again, that could be curse if Nissan botches that up too.

The clutch/throwout bearing/transmission noise is still present, but the dealership says it's normal even though I noticed the tech looked quite puzzled while checking the underside of my car.

The G35's must be having similar problems...I can't imagine why it wouldn't?!?!?!?

The noise you are hearing is completely normal. Larger cut gears and heavy duty bearings make noise....that's the price we pay for having a strong transmission.

In fact, I haven't heard of anyone busting a 350Z trans yet...and some guys are running near 500whp. Before anyone says it....having gears grind is NOT "busting" the trans...it's a synchronizer issue...not a trasmission strength issue. Shredding gears, and not being able to drive the car is a strength issue

Go listen to any sports car that has stock or near stock exhaust idle. (aftermarket exhaust will drone it out) You'll hear bearing noise in many many sports cars. My buddies C5 vette has it...and my other buddies E36 M3 has it MUCH worse than my Z.

I have to agree. Unless the throwout bearing is bad but I've only heard one or two instances of this happing on the Z.

The original 6 speed transmission was part number -CD000. The latest one is -CD008 which means there have been 8 changes to the transmission since it first came out! The latest update also includes a revised clutch pedal assembly. I dont see how a Nissan dealer can give you a hard time about transmission abuse when Nissan keeps updating the transmission in an obvious attempt to improve on the original design!

you have to keep in mind that in the manufacturing world small changes (regardless of mechanical significance) can necessitate a revision. Who know if eight revs is typical for a new tranny design or not.
