I have been driving manual transmission vehicles for over 30 years, do not race or do burn outs, ride the clutch or mistreat the car in any way.

Nissan claims that this is normal wear and tear, but not after 1800 and 8200 miles respectively!

They are currently replacing the top under warranty ( there was a defect) and they should do the same for the clutch.

I refuse to be on the hook for a new transmission every 6 months!

I will let you know how it all turns out.
The latest update seems to be the fix....mine is going on 8,000 miles on the new trans without a hitch. Each of my previous ones started to grind gears around 3000-4000miles...

I just got my tranny replaced at performance nissan after 20,000 miles. it was grinding from 2nd to 3rd at over 3k RMS.
i upgraded to the JWT clutch/flywheel. now i have to wait 1000 miles for everything to be fully broken in.
hopefully this problem is fixed!

Default Fifth Blown...

Grinding started at 5000 miles.

Transmission, clutch, flywheel all replaced at 20,000 - 3/1/2004

Now ECU cutting out ignition at 5500 RPM (VDC OFF, SLIP and Engine Service light on) Dropped car back at dealer today.

Really bummed at this point!

Keep us updated it.

I am starting to feel a light grind in 2nd gear and I am getting worried. I had this issue before with my previous Z and I don't want to start all over again.

I also have light grind going into 2nd gear with my new transmission (installed in Jan. 04) and with only 1,000 miles into its life.

Also, I've notice the clicking noise from the transmission is coming back, this noise is heard when the clutch is not engage. That noise was the reason I brought the Z to Nissan and they replace the transmission, they said the noise came from some bearing went bad in the transmission. I'll have to contact them again for these problem on the new tranny, and this is only 1,000 miles new!!!

Whew this is somewhat relieving to hear I thought I was the only person having this problem .I ordered mine in Oct. 2002 but did not get it until Jan 2003. since then i have put 6300 miles on it and am now grinding into 3rd gear. I am taking it to a Nissan dealership glad to hear that this is most likely not going to be much of a hassle.

This will be a good list for anyone that needs to get a replacement and doesn't want any hassles. Just print it out and take it to your dealer. It will prove a history with many cars with the same problem.

Just post the date (or close to it) and post a second time if you have had it done more than once.

PLEASE ONLY POST IN HERE ABOUT YOUR REPLACEMENTS AND NOTHING ELSE. JUST REPLACEMENTS AND DATES (OR APPROXIMATE DATE).

I will go first:

Tranny is slang for Transmission. Most of the transmissions discussed on this thread as faulty are the 6 speed manual.

Well, had my tranny replaced for third gear grind this past weekend. 28k miles on her, Vin 11289. New tranny is quieter than the last one, ie, throwout bearing, but still slightly notchy. I have the 008 model number.

I had redline in the previous tranny and I am still considering putting either that or Royal Purple in it. Maybe that will cure the notchiness again.

Does the redline or royal purple meet nissan spec's? The reason I ask is I have a new Toyota 4runner 5speed auto that runs a new WS (world standard) fluid that they say, no one else makes any fluid that measures up to the WS Fluid.

It is Gl-4 rated fluid. I hear the 2004 manual even specifies that 75W90 (which both redline and royal purple as well as amsoil are) can be used within the car as well. Royal purple even goes as far as to say that it does not corrode brass synchros, which is what the Z has. As for auto trannies, I am not sure what can be used, but royal purple has an application list on thier website that you might want to check out.

Tranny replaced 4/04 8500 miles.
It wasnt for grinding though. I had a gear whine noise or somthing in first gear when decelerating (sounded like the noise some cars make when backing in reverse and was kinda loud). It wouldnt do it in any other gear and when its hot out you could hear it even while giving it gas in 1st.
The dealer told me the tranny, clutch, and clutch pedal were all revised and needed to be replaced (which were).

Anyone got info on what they changed concerning the trans/clutch? Whats was improved?

It drives great now. Plus the shifter feels stiffer...espeically going into 5th/6th (feels like my friends 04' model). And the clutch letup feels better now.

You mean there is a different feel from 03 to 04 models?

Yeah. On my 03' 5th and 6th felt alot like shifting into 3rd and 4th. Now (and on the 04's), going into 5th/6th has a more deliberate feel to it (like going into 5th on a 5 speed). All the gears feel a little more positive in engagement too...But I didnt think my old tranny felt bad! Its hard to explain and im not a tech.

I see the Road and Track long term 350Z had a new transmission:

"At 26,500 miles we took the car into the dealer to address a bad 5th-gear synchro and excessive gear whine. The verdict was an internal failure in the transmission, replaced by Nissan under warranty. While the transmission was out, the dealer also noticed that the clutch was worn and had hot spots. This necessitated its replacement along with the pressure plate, throw-out bearing and flywheel. The dealer considers these as "wear items," and felt they had undergone abuse. While we do drive the Z with vigor, we disagree we ever abused it. Nonetheless, we were out $1183."

this is in the latest issue
