I believe the compressor comes on to provide dehumidified air.

Yep. Keeps your window from fogging up in the cold weather.

"Defroster/defogger". You can turn the AC off if you don't want it. After you turn airflow **** and the light comes on. Hit the button where the light is and the AC will shut off.

you know...this may actually answer a question i was about to post...

lol...

i bought a used roadster about a month ago, and have had it under wraps...been busy putting some wheels, tires, and c/o's on it...

i have noticed the same thing with my car. it's an '05, and i could have sworn that it had some elecrtrical demons with teh AC system...

jsut about every other time i get in, turn the heat on, i notice the AC light is lit...so i turn it off...then, every once in a while, i will look down, and it is on again....i even watched it turn on during my maiden wheel and coilover test when i hit a hard *** bump....

is this coincidence? i hope so...

turning off the AC here and there does not bother me in the least, that is, unless it is an actual problem....

just cofirming that it is supposed to do this...i even can hear the defrost blowing at the dash when this is happening...i hear the defrost blowing hard when the fan speed dial is very low.....wierd....

all kosher, right???

thanks again guys....
