Default Changing rear shocks... can I do it with my limited knowledge

2004 350z - stock

So, both my rear shocks are shot. The dealer wants $600 (parts and labor) to replace them, a local shop wants $340 (parts and labor). Can I do this even cheaper/better?

My knowledge of cars is limited. I have changed brake pads/rotors (disc only), changed the oil myself, installed air filters and I have sort of installed a water pump in an old cherokee...

So, are rear shocks something I an handle? I can rent the big tools from Autozone, I have jack stands, and a friend that is willing to help. Anyone have a guide/guidance/advice on this?

Yes, you can do it. The rear is very, very straightforward.

Not sure. I want to say less than 20,000 miles on them? Definitely less than 30k. One issue though, I believe they are softer than 350Z shocks. But if you're in a bind and need some shocks fast and cheap these will work.

If you know how to take the brakes apart to change the pads, this should be a walk in the park for you.

The rear shocks are one of the most straight forward installs for the Z since the shock stands alone from the spring. Just make sure you don't over-torque the top mounts.

All you need is a floor jack, jack stands, two wrenches (its literally 4 bolts per side), some sockets, an extension for the two nuts at the top shock mount, and a torque wrench to put everything back together. As easy as changing the oil...easier if you count the 14 annoying undertray bolts.

Agree. Anyone who can get the brake rotors off the car can surely replace the rear shocks. Remember that unlike the front the rear shocks are NOT inside the springs.

Not sure what your budget is but consider a performance shock such as this. Reference: http://www.tirerack.com/suspension/S...lar=&brand=all
