Default Airbag deployed for no reason...

I parked my car today, got out, walked about 5 feet, and boom. There goes my drivers airbag. WTF?? So I take it into Nissan. They come out telling me Nissan doesnt want them working on it because I have aftermarket speakers, grounding kit and a sub, LOL! So he gives me the cost of the parts without labor and its like $2500, lol. I ended up taking the car back, drove it home and cut the airbag for the time being.
My options (I guess) are to replace it with a personal wheel and a hub, or for about $1500 I can replace the wheel and the harness. The harness is around $1200 and I can find an airbag for around 250-300.
I tried calling Nissan consumer affairs but they are closed all ready.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think since I already brought it..its on record since they have my VIN...and the magnusson moss act covers all that ****..they cant void my warranty or anything of the sort without proving the speaker wiring cause the airbag to deploy HA!.

Better Business Bureau: file a clam under the lemon law in your state and they will get Nissan USA's attention.

Sorry to hear - condolences.

I would talk to Nissan and furthermore Nissan NA and you may want to seek the counsel of a lawyer. I'm not a huge 'lawsuit' kind of guy but you are out a healthy amount of cost and you lost an companion through no fault of your own. It would only seem right and fair to be reimbursed for your expense.

let us know what transpires

I doubt that with the car being at least 11 years old, Nissan won't do anything. I would contact your insurance company. I would think that would fall under your comprehensive policy.

Isn't the warranty on safety equipment (seatbelts, retractors, airbags, etc.) a lifetime warranty?

I really have no idea about suing Nissan, but I'm sorry for your loss. I would just ask your insurance company how to tackle this one.

I checked my warranty booklet and seatbelts are covered for 10 years with no mileage restriction. Air bags are a different problem. The 2003 warranty booklet states the air bags are covered under the power train warranty which is 5 years or 60,000 miles.
