Default Shifting into gears...

Hey guys, I never driven any other Zs or Gs so heres my question... When shifting into first or any other gears, is it very stiff and seems like you have to push very hard? I always hear crunch noise and feels like its crunching everytime switching gears... Also, A lot of the times when down shifting, I always have problem of putting it into gear.. it seems like it wont go in. I have to push super hard... Whats the problem guys?! omfg =/

I cannot tell from your description if you have a transmission problem, a clutch problem or no problem at all. How about letting a mechanic drive the car.

I never had problem putting it into gear.
But I might know what crunching noise/feel you are talking about.
If you came from driving a mazda or honda transmission...just know the Z will not be nearly as smooth.

You are asking a question that is impossible to diagnose without access to your car. The responses you get here will mostly be guesses. Some people will guess the problem is the transmission, others will blame the clutch, and another guess will be engine speed matched to proper shift points.

I have a recent transmission replacement in my Z. I would describe this transmission as “silky.” It shifts smoothly, drops quickly and easily into the selected gear, and engages perfectly. Down-shifts are great (I don’t have the latest Z with rev-matching so I need to “blip” the throttle, but it is exceptionally smooth).

I’ve driven the BMW Z3 (you mention this car); and although the Z’s and the B’s transmission have a different “feel,” I don’t see any significant advantage in either car’s transmission. I’ll give the BMW a couple of points because the engine’s RPM’s drop faster than the 350Z, but that’s probably not the case with the 370Z which has a better and more responsive engine.

davidv wisely provides the best advice…

…The problem you describe could be anywhere from a faulty transmission to something as simple as a minor adjustment to your clutch pedal-travel.

As davidv suggests, you need to have an experienced driver or technician operate the car to determine the exact nature and extent of the problem you are describing.
