Default Metal on Metal Scraping/Screeching noise from front of car

I have an '06 Z with 44k miles on it. This morning I noticed a rather loud scraping/screeching noise coming from the front end of the car (i think from the wheels). It only does it when the car is in motion. It does it when I am travelling straight, however its much louder when turning. It sounds like a rapid on and off scraping...almost like there is something loose thats hitting the rotor and scraping it.

Has anyone else had this issue? What was the cause and solution to the problem?

Thanks very much for your help!

Many disc brake pads have little metal tabs that will touch the brake rotors when the pads have worn down. They sound like scraping metal. If the noise goes away when you step on the brakes, you need new pads at a minimum.

This is your problem. Time for new brakes!

Worth a thousand words:
(this is just a generic brake pad)

If it's not your pads worn down to the squealers, it could be a pebble is caught between the shield and rotor. I've had that happen.

Thank you for your help guys. I actually think it was a pebble. The sound has since dissappeared and I havent heard it anymore. I was thinking breakpads to but it didnt really sound like the brakepad indicator to me...so thats why I asked.

It's still a good idea for you to pull off the wheel and take a look, especially if you haven't looked at your brakes for a while. It's cheap insurance to check.
