Default Engine Whine

Recently I've been noticing an engine whine. I had an oil change and transmission fluid change about a month ago. When I go to class in the morning it's definitely a loud, noticeable whine. When the engine has somewhat warmed up, you can occassionally hear it in third gear. Recently I had a SES light, took it to the dealer and told me that my aftermarket exhaust is causing pressure buildup or something like that and recommended new cats. I explained to them about the whine and some how recommended a new clutch.

About the whine, when I am in gear I can hear it. If I'm driving and I put the car in neutral and I'm rolling, there is no whine. I was wondering if someone had an idea what's going on?

heres a vid of the noise

What you're describing sounds like tranny whine to me, which is normal. You'll get the whine when the tranny is under load but if you let it coast it goes away. Happens in certain gears/rpms but not at others.

A recording would help a lot but I'm sure it's tough to hear over the road/engine/exhaust noise.

I have a whine like that not too long ago. Though mine if I put it in neutral and let it idle it wouldn't whine but give me a grinding/rattle noise. In gear as I pulled through the RPM's the noise would get louder and higher in pitch. Took it to the dealer under warranty and turns out it was the input shaft bearing had gone out. Happened twice before they got it right.

Not saying thats it, just pitching ideas

agree with the kitten. I wondered what it was for a while till I searched it to death. Its the transmission internals spinning. Its normal!!!

at least thats what 2 other mechanics have told me

Okay so I tried to get a video today and I I tried recording with the windows down, it was distinct even with the windows up but was unable to for a bit. It does sort of sound like its coming from the transmission, the way you describe things. I need to reproduce the sounds when I take it to Nissan. It doesnt sound like the sound u say like a spin, but a distinct whine.

If your warranty is on the fringe I would quit driving it around, and take it to Nissan at the first available chance. Even if they don't diagnose it right then still get them to right an invoice with the mileage/date/complaint on it so if you do roll over your warranty you'll still be covered.

I did mention it and it is in the report from when I took it to Nissan earlier this week for a SES light. They said it was supposedly coming from the clutch and recommended a new clutch. This is in LA, I'm going back home this weekend and hopefully plan on taking it to a Nissan there.

Yeah so what should I do? I already took it to Nissan and they said they couldn't find anything. Considering my warranty ends in a few days I have to act fast, unless I get extended warranty.

Definitely sounds like the tranny- what gear were you in and what rpm when you did that? I've heard that noise in first and reverse but once you get past that it shouldn't be that loud.

Have you changed the tranny fluid since you've owned the car?

Definitely take it to the dealership and get this documented- if one dealership gives you problems, take it to another dealer. You don't have to take it to any particular dealership.

2k-3k seems like the appropriate range. sometimes you have to go a little fast just to hear the sound. I took it to a local nissan dealer and they said they found nothing. I'm going back to my parents house tomorrow, where I bought the car. Hopefully they can do something about it. I changed the transmission fluid like a month ago, along with an oil change.

I assume you put in the correct amount/type of fluid?
