Angry "SES" light keeps coming back

My Service Engine Soon light keeps coming back on. Great Neck Nissan replaced the Catalytic Converter-light came back three days later. I went back and they charged me $400 to replace an oxygen sensor (Of course, I'm at 38,000 miles so the warranty just ran out). The light came back on today (again, three days later). I always replace the gas cap tightly, so I don't think it's that.

I want the dealership to apply a credit for the work they charged me for last week, since it wasn't the right move. What I don't understand is: Doesn't their computer tell them the code for exactly what is wrong? How could they be wrong twice?

I think I might I might go to an Autozone and have them read the code for me...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

AZ says the code is p2a00, which is a general air/fuel ration issue, senor 1, bank 1...wonder if maybe I need to clean my nismo air filters? they don't look too dirty. but I've had them for two years and never cleaned them...

anyone know how many o2 sensors the 07 Z has? Two?

Actually, the Nissan definition for P2A00 is just "A/F Sensor 1 Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1
circuit range/performance".

The FSM explanation is..
The output voltage computed by ECM from the
A/F sensor 1 signal is shifted to the lean side
for a specified period.
The output voltage computed by ECM from the
A/F sensor 1 signal is shifted to the rich side for
a specified period.

Possible causes...

Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1
Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 heater
 Fuel pressure
 Fuel injector
 Intake air leaks

After 2004, all Zs have 4 O2 sensors. Two in front of the cats (sensor 1) and two after the cats (sensor 2).

Does anyone know if that Oxy Sensor is covered under the 80,000 mile gov't mandated warranty for emissions pieces?

Nope. Only the cats and ECU are covered.

As for the random mixture codes... they will have to go through everything to figure it out. Could be anything in the fuel system to a leakage of unmetered air.

Thanks for the info! I hope they will give me a credit for the sensor replaced last week. We'll see. If they keep replacing things and charging me, it's going to get really expensive

Do you think they made a mistake changing the cat con and the oxy sensor? Is there any way to know? Am I getting screwed?

Not sure why they would have changed the cat unless testing showed it might not being working at the expected efficiency. It should have been under warranty anyway so it didn't cost you. The sensor makes sense based on the error code. Since it didn't solve the problem, it probably wasn't necessary - you can try on insisting that they credit you for the "fix" since it didn't work. Good luck.

You could always pull the plugs on bank 1 to check their condition to see if one looks like it is running richer or leaner than the others. It is possible to have an injector, plug, or coil performing badly on bank 1 that could cause that DTC to set also. That is something easy you can do your self.

Yeah, they shouldn't be changing sensors and cats on a 38,000 mile old car until they have confirmed the tests came back outside of spec. Cats are very easy to verify and the sensors should be checked before replaced. I'd throw a fit about both. As it stands, if you had a stock car and it threw that light, it might not pass emissions testing. BTW why aren't they doing this on their own dime?

Oh yeah... $400.00 to replace a single oxygen sensor is outright robbery. It takes about 20 minutes to do and the OEM part costs between $90-150.00. Watch out for this dealership... RED FLAGS everywhere.
