My Z died while I was driving and now won't turn on.

Ok, I'm thinking ECM problems. You mentioned an (aftermarket) alarm system. Maybe it's possible that the alarm has cut power to the ECM? It appears (2004 FSM) that the ECM needs to provide power to a relay (between the key swithch and the solenoid) that enables the starter motor solenoid/cranking. The ECM also appears to run the fuel pump.

The mechanic didn't show up today.

Dude, it's not your starter and it's not your fuel pump, trust me. If it was your starter your car wouldn't of shut off in the middle of driving. If it was your fuel pump your car would crank when you turn the key, just not start; because the pump wouldnt be feeding fuel to the injectors. First thing I would do is GET SOMEONE TO READ THE CODES (DTC''s) when cars die like that they can throw a code to the computer if say a sensor shi*s out. You wouldn't know if it has a code cause the CEL stays on when the car is started; but the car won't start. Check for any codes, that may help send you in the right direction, then come back. But like I said from my experience, it doesn't sound like a fuel pump or a starter. Ignition switch is still possible too.
