Default Oversized Oil Filter

Thought Id share with you guys my findings in regards to an oversized oil filter for the VQ35DE....

I had recently read on a 370Z forum and on BobIsTheOilGuy.com that a lot of VQ guys are rocking the Purolator PureOne PL14610 because it is slightly bigger than the OEM sized filters, ergo more filtration surface area. But upon doing some research I had found out that the PL14610 is rated at 99% filtration @ 40 microns, where as just about every other aftermarket oil filter for the VQ is rated at 99% filtration @ 20 microns. I also wanted to see first hand how much bigger the PL14610 really was, and to my disappointment, at first glance I couldnt even tell it was bigger than OEM. Only until putting one side by side to an oem oil filter, I could tell that there was even a difference.

So, I went back to the forums and did some more research and referenced some oil filter numbers and what not. And I also took a measuring caliper to the Oil Cooler/Sandwich Plate to find the max OD of the mounting flange [~3" od].... and luckily I found a monster oil filter that would fit our oil cooler sandwich plate.....

Here's the Oil Filter's specs:
Part Number: 51347
Media: Paper
Height: 4.828
Outer Diameter Top: 2.921
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 20X1.5 MM
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes
Beta Ratio: 2/20=6/20
Burst Pressure-PSI: 325
Max Flow Rate: 9-11 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 21

Gasket Diameters
Number O.D. I.D. Thk.

This filter has just about every advantage of the other popular oil filters [k&n, purolator, bosche, etc], but with about 2x the filtration surface area.

This filter is also better than the cheap oem filter because it has metal ends, where as the oem filter has flimsy cardboard ends.

I always felt that the oem sized filter looked a bit puny.
And I figured if I was gonna go with an oversized oil filter, I mind as well go w a big one lol.

Plus now I can add a little more oil to the car

I've often thought about the "toy" sized filter on the Z.One car I owned(long time ago)was a VW Karmann Ghia.Had a modified engine...installed a aux.oil cooler with a seperate
filter about the size of the WIX shown. The objective was to have more oil in the system since the VW is aircooled. It added almost an extra qt.
Just wondering what real difference this monster filter will make on a Z over an efficient OEM size filter with regular oil changes? You'd think if a larger filter was a plus,Nissan tould have put one on the car in the first place. There sure is not a clearance issue for a larger filter.

Is it me or is the Oil/Cooler Sandwich plate not in the photos?

If not how much room do you have left for those using an external cooler?

I've been meaning to do a little searching to get a bigger filter but was waiting to put my oil cooler setup together.

Good work BTW

Pretty sure nissan uses the small filter on so many vehicles to save money.
I'm also thinking that the size of the nissan filter is based on a size that would work for many of their engines, not necessarily for optimum performance per engine.

i use the normal "small" oil filter with just fine blackstone reports.

Can you show reports the larger ones are actually better based on lab results. Didnt see that on BIOG.

I am not seeking to prove anything.
I'm just stating the obvious: more filtration surface area and the ability to add a little more oil to the system.

I should have done a baseline oil analysis, but oh well....maybe someone else can do it
