Transmission Grind - ADD TO THE LIST!
Car - 2008 350z Base, 36,4xx miles on car, mods are ART pipes and Nismo S-Tune exhaust.
I seem to be having more problems than most with the transmission on my 2008 350z. Nissan will be installing my 4th transmission by the end of the week because of 5th gear grind. Before I hear I am just a terrible driver and have no idea what I am doing I have driven the car since it was brand new, and know how to drive the car. Others and Nissan techs were able to replicate the problem.
The original transmission would grind 2nd to 5th and 4th to 5th, but was replaced no problem by a local dealership.
The second transmission started having the same problems with 5th gear grind, but would also grind 6th to 5th and neutral to 5th even when rev-matched. I had a Nissan tech ride with me and was able to show him exactly the MPH for the grind to happen. The transmission was replaced in October of 2011 by local dealership.
I currently have the 3rd transmission in my car, and ever since it was installed 5th, 6th, and reverse have been much harder to get in and out of gear. The transmission has also started grinding around 43mph going from 4th to 5th. I had a buddy drive it and he told me I should take it back in to Nissan because something wasn't right.
I have a Nissan tech drive the car he wasn't able to replicate the grind and didn't feel as though there was anything wrong with the transmission. He then has a supervisor drive it who wasn't able to replicate the grind, but as soon as he got out he says it's as though the transmission is damaged. So I believe it either wasn't installed right or a damaged transmission was installed. They end up on the phone with Nissan and I am getting a new transmission, but Nissan's said that this is the final transmission. Every transmission was replaced under 36,000 miles/3 years, and every transmission that was replaced was within the year warranty.
I don't understand why I am being told this is the last time Nissan will replace something that is still under warranty. Nissan USA says that they have no known issues with this transmission, and the whole point of this thread is to show them otherwise.

1. 4th Transmission being put in due to 5th gear grinding
2. 3rd Transmission 5th, 6th, and reverse were tough to get in and out of gear since installed
3. 3rd Transmission either installed incorrectly or damaged transmission.
4. Nissan USA says there is no known problem with transmission, and final transmission even with warranty on part.
5. Use thread as record in case any problems with 4th transmission (unless it fails).
If you have had any transmission grinding problem and had it replaced please add your name to the list. I want this as record incase there are any problems with my 4th and "final" transmission.
Post year, what number transmission you are on, and mileage if you remember what it was it when replaced.

Redline06 2008 base, got my 2nd transmission @ 35k miles . Grinded randomly but. Could replicate the problem every time shifting from 3rd to 5th . Service advisor told me a transmission isn't supposed to be shifted that way. I explained to him what synchros are.
Why is it that people always have very Ironic usernames for their situation....
Is the dealership giving you new transmissions or used ones or rebuilt ones?

many ppl are unaware there is a shifter stalk alignment procedure that requires a step by step adjsutment of the shift linkage... almsot 99.99% of ppl who work on the car think it jsut bolts right back in, thsi is not the case.
In these situations, it needs to ahve the clutch fully bled and filled from the bottom end up, it needs to ahve the shifter aligned properly, and it needs the clutch pedal adjsuted correctly as well.
Just stuff id say to ask about and check out.. throwing parts at it wont help if the installation is not accurate.
Aftermarket clutches, shift forks, throwout bearings etc need to be thought of as well if youre not 100% OEM.
Also if you had a version one trans and they gave you a cd009 replacement, and didnt swap over the correct brearings and forks, that can be an issue as well.
plenty of threads on it all..
All things to bring up to your servicer.

I understand what you are saying, but the point is I should not have to tell a Nissan Tech what to do. I have seen the other threads and they are the reason I made this thread. I want to try and put together a list of who else has had this problem.

Well, I am in the same boat as luckydog. I've had my transmission replaced 3 times since I purchased it, and the previous owner had it replaced once as well. So I'm on my 5th transmission (allegedly).
When I first got the car, the trans made a loud whining noise at lower RPMs. They said it was the input shaft bearing, and they replaced the whole transmission. About 6 months later, shifting into 2nd gear started getting a lot rougher. I've taken it back and complained many times; sometimes they said that nothing's wrong, other times they've said that the transmission was "out of alignment", but after a lot of complaining I got them to replace the transmission 3 separate times (this was at two different dealerships). However, each time they said they "replaced" the transmission there was pretty much zero difference as to how the car shifted, so I'm skeptical that they were ever replaced at all (except for the first one, the whining noise in the trans definitely went away and was replaced by my whining
)
As for how my transmission behaves now, my problem gear is always upshifting into second and sometimes third. Sometimes it makes a small grind, sometimes it gives me a lot of resistance before it will let me into gear unless I either wait a second or two or just try to force it in (which I try to avoid doing since that usually results in a rough shift and/or grind). Sometimes it will shift very smoothly without me needing to pause before I put it in to second (which is how it should be). But I'd say about 10-20% of shifts into 2nd gear are rough unless I wait about 2 seconds before it will let me into gear smoothly. It feels like something is blocking me from getting it into gear. These are all at slow speeds, about 2.5-3.5K in first gear before I shift into second.
Also most recently when I shift into second sometimes it feels like the shifter wants to pop out of first gear as soon as I push the clutch pedal.
My roommate also has an 07 350 and his transmission shifts like butter in comparison. It's a night and day difference.
I'd like to get it fixed once and for all but after all the hassle I've gotten so far I'm very doubtful that anything will actually get done.

I bought my car used (2005), the motor was changed at a nissan dealership due to "oil consumption" issues by the previous owner. The motor now has about 9k miles on it ( if it was new, I dont have any documentation on the engine condition ( if it was new or used, im guessing new
)
The car has 59k miles on it so its well past its manufacture warantee, and sometimes I press the clutch all the way down and it grinds on 3rd or 5th. I have tried to find the speed or rpms to replicate it but I cant >:l When the car is warm though and I step out you can hear the noise coming from the tranny, like a bag of marbles was placed inside and as soon as you press the clutch its gone. I have read this is a throwout bearing issue, but all the nissan dealerships I have been to say is " its normal" T____T
yeah B.S, Im waiting and saving for when my transmission decides to die, and then I'll have to shell out alot of cash for one, I dont even know if they make after market ones for the Z, I havent researched anything, so just a thought on my part.

The problem comes from the way you drive. Why do you know the car grinds from 2nd to 5th? Because you shift that way all the time. These transmission cant handle it. Only time you should be going into 5th gear is from 4th or 6th, where the rpm split is mild. Any more than that and the transmission can't seem to take it.
My car did the same thing, would grind repeatedly going into 5th from 4th or 6th, was replaced at about 27K miles. This one has been perfect but I've only got 44K on the car now.
