Default Fix mpg

I was reading about mpg since my mpg seem to dropped a little lately and came across this. Wonder if anyone tried this yet?

Source is at the bottom of the post

if your mpg is abnormal and you have no idea why???? a simple test on a stock 350z is a 0 to 60 mph test..... if your air/fuel mixture is off then you will get 2+seconds on your results.

the simple fix is to disconect your battery for 30 minutes..... re-conect battery and start engine.... your ECU is officially under air/fuel re-learning procedure..... you must keep RPM'S below 2,000 on your way to a flat open highway .... on the highway bring Z to 60 mph with low RPM'S and keep it there for 30 minutes..... exit and do the same on the way back..... the next 2 to 3 days take it easy on the gas pedal...

if you install a air intake kit, performance exhaust or any other performance mod.... you should do this procedure.....

this solution to my horrible MPG came after spending $$$$ on throtle intake cleaning, new spark plugs, maf cleaning, new tranny fluid, rear diff fluid, 3 gas tanks with fuel treatment, checking oxygen sensors................ and mpg increased a little.... no service engine light came on ... engine seemed ok... i did a 0 to 60 and was off by 3 seconds..... my first thought was my rings on cylinders where done....

i was fortunate to find a tech that went through the whole engine and in no time was able to point out the air/fuel mixture problem.......

i wanted to share this info with this nissan club so that others will not go crazy trying to figure out their horrible MPG..

I'd like to see some people try it with before/after results before I believe it. Can you say "placebo effect"?

It reminds me of the urban legend we used to hear the first couple of years the Z was out. Supposedly at some magic mileage (2000, 5000, 7500, 10000 - the number varied based on who was telling it), the ECU would magically "open up" and you'd get full power. Lots of people swore by it. Nobody ever really proved it happened or existed.

BTW - ECU reset generally requires several hours of disconnect time, not 30 minutes. That's why I'm skeptical already.

With a few slight variations, there's also a claim that it works on other Nissan vehicles... http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0ce729

If your MPG is horrible its cause your not replacing stuff at service intervals and ignoring the check engine light, not checking your tire pressures etc. The ECU actually adapts to the internal wear of engine over time by constantly monitoring the AF ratio. It's always trying to get the best emissions and MPG if your not WOT. WOT defaults back to open loop, no attempt at fuel control, full power. If you reset ECU you lose all that fuel trim adaptation, it will get back to that state fairly quickly though.

A brief, possibly only in your head experience of more power could be due to a richer long term fuel trim, more MPG is cause you reset that stupid thing that figure fuel use during idle into actual MPG. I get 18.9 when I leave it alone, 22 on highway if reset but I spend a lot of time full throttle near redline and haven't used 6th for a year or so.

TL; DR: BS
